The obesity epidemic is not restricted to industrialized societies; this increase is often faster in developing countries than in the developed world. Why is this happening? While genes are important in determining a person's susceptibility to weight gain, energy balance is determined by calorie intake, nutrient density and physical activity. Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes associated with development and lack of supportive policies in sectors such as health, agriculture, transport, urban planning, environment, food processing, distribution, marketing and education. As incomes rise and populations become more urban, diets high in complex carbohydrates give way to more varied diets with a higher proportion of fats, saturated fats and sugars. Thus societal changes and worldwide nutrition transition are driving the obesity epidemic. Good news is that these diseases are PREVENTABLE as Obesity is preventable! Effective weight management for individuals and groups who are at risk of developing obesity involves a range of long-term strategies. These include prevention, weight maintenance, management of co-morbidities and healthy weight loss. They should be part of an integrated, multi-sectoral, population-based approach, which includes environmental support for healthy diets and regular physical activity with a calm mind.     So we don’t have a holiday for Valentine’s Day but TGIF ( thank god it’s Friday), so take some out and celebrate love and romance. Make it special by decorating your home for the holiday. Decorate your home for Valentine’s Day in a minimum budget and beautify your home with beautiful decorations. And you can also re- use these items again next year. Store them carefully so that they are not exposed to moisture and you can use them again. Decide who you are decorating for: your Valentine’s Day décor choices will depend on if you are catering to children, a spouse, or simply yourself. Lighting If you are in the mood to be a little bold you use miniature lights to highlight a corner place or window or your railings. If you have clear or white lights, this will look nice and you can also use  pink, red or purple light with white combination. Use the wire garland on top of your pictures that are hanging on your walls. Decorate the door ways  with draped Valentine’s Day garland to make your home look more festive. Use valentine’s garlands: You can find wire garlands with red or pink hearts. Many stores also have tinsel type garland with cupids or hearts and some are just in Valentine’s Day colours of white and red, pink, or purple. Exam Time Diet

    We have spoken about writing tips during exams and now we would also like to add more information about a child’s diet which is one of the most neglected aspects during their exams. It has been observed that even kids who usually eat healthy end up eating a lot of junk food and drink pots of coffee to stay awake during exam times. Plan out your kids’ exam diet in advance, discuss it with them and you are ready to face the trying times! Presenting some tried-and-tested diet tips to help you through the exam times: Healthy breakfast Giving a child a heavy and healthy breakfast is very important. Foods like Oats, Muesli, Upma, Khichdi, Idlis etc are great options with a low glycemic index which provide a constant and steady supply of glucose. Small  meals Loading them with three to four large meals in the day could make them sleepy and lethargic as blood is redirected to the stomach instead of the brain. Small, frequent, nutritious meals make sure that they have a constant flow of steady nourishment keeping them alert and awake. Fresh fruits/fruit smoothies/dry fruits/honey-coated nuts/soups/interesting salads etc are good options. Proteins  Carbs are digested quickly whereas proteins provide the much-needed slow burn giving a constant source of energy. A breakfast rich in protein (eggs, poha, idlis, dosa, dhokla etc) increases tyrosine (an amino acid) levels in the blood and brain which help nerve cells manufacture chemicals which keep your kids alert and active. Water therapy  When kids sit in the comfort of their room and probably with their AC on, they do not feel thirsty and hence end up drinking very less fluids. When dehydrated, the body and mind are dazed, restless. It is hard concentrating on studies. If they do not like drinking water that much, give them fresh fruit juices/chaas or buttermilk/nimbu pani or lime juice/green tea to keep them going. Avoid processed foods Foods like chocolate, cookies etc can cause a sudden spike in sugar levels in the blood. After a while, when the stomach feels empty it could lead to craving for more such junk food. Stress-buster foods  During stressful times like the exams, the body’s requirement for certain water-soluble vitamins like Vitamin B complex and C, minerals like zinc goes up. These help in the synthesis and functioning of adrenal hormones that basically are our stress-fighting hormones. Brown rice, nuts, eggs, fresh veggies and fruits can help. Avoid eating outside  Exams being times for high-stress and low-immunity, children are highly prone for infections. So, avoid eating outside food as much as possible. If your kid really craves for it, just order stuff you have tried before from trusted restaurants you’ve tried before.

Legible or illegible writing

  Is a clue to whether you want to be understood or not Legible or illegible writing in itself tells us little or nothing about the mentality of the writer. A great many professional men and women, top executives, statesmen, authors, musician and most certainly doctors cians and most certainly doctors (as their prescriptions often show) writer illegibly. Young children attempt to write legibly because their attention is concentrated on forming letters. The desire of the detail-worker (One who gives attention to details) is to be sloppy with detail is to turn out a slipshod piece of work. These people have patience and they are found in the ranks of clerical workers, bookkeepers and often kindergarten teachers. It is not usually in the nature of the detail worker to write an individualized script i.e. to say, different from what they were taught. The mechanical accuracy seen in the handwriting of such people shows an ability to follow a prescribed pattern of thought and action themselves in following the copy book script. These people are rarely leaders, their very desire to following a pattern of writing of writing laid down by someone else is the same desire that makes them followers. But legible writing doesn’t belong only to detail workers. Other people may be capable of doing detail work of a different sort. A clear thinking scientist, with a direct approach to his research, may write legibly. Handwriting is, after all, a means of communicating with your fellowmen. If you are cooperative and want to be understood you will make the effort to write in such a manner so as to make it easier for them to do so. Writing illegibly is a way of saying: “This is the way I am, try to understand me if you can, if you cannot, too bad.” Illegible writing belongs, first of all, to the uneducated (Illiterate) person. With training, the formations may become more readable, but education does not necessarily result in legible writing. One might be able to express his thoughts with clarity in conversation yet not write legibly. On the other hand, one might be awkward, even inarticulate in conversation yet his handwriting might be quite legible. A nervous person may write illegibly.   Computers, Laptops, Tablets...our lives are definitely not existing without atleast one of these at home and unescapably at work. Typically, there’s nothing wrong with using a basic workstation, but when you spend most of your waking hours sitting at that desk, you may want to consider making it a more comfortable space, for short-term and long-term health. If you have pain or fatigue in your hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, upper back or neck it may be related to using a computer. Perhaps you cannot afford to significantly change the work area in your room, but you can probably make small adjustments to promote comfort. Bad posture is the root of all. Back pain, one of the most common complaints of older men and women, is usually the result of years of faulty posture. In addition, poor posture can affect the position and function of your vital organs, particularly those in the abdominal region. While you’re typing, your wrists should not be resting, but held up in line with the backs of your hands. Your fingers should be in a straight line with your forearm. The keyboard should ideally be just above your lap so your elbows are bent at least 90°. If you can’t move your keyboard, try adjusting the height of your chair. Your monitor should be slightly below eye level and straight ahead, not to one side. You can use anti-glare screens to avoid your eyes being strained. To make sure your posture is correct, sit with a neutral spine position, with your hips at about 90°. If your back is straight, supported by back and abdomen muscles, you can relax your shoulders without slouching. Stand up and walk frequently, stand straight to promote health and good appearance. Exercise your hand by pushing on top of your fingers, and using backward resistance movements. Do a minimum of fifteen reps for each hand at least six times every day. - Prathyusha Talluri.

It’s fine to eat with your Hands

    With spoons and forks replacing the usage of hands and the influence of Western culture on Indian households, eating with hands is slowly fading. Perceived as unhygienic and primitive, the practice of eating with hands seems to be perceived only as primitive. To appreciate the habit of eating with hands we must delve into our Vedic wisdom to know the reasons why it is good for us. For centuries Indians have been eating with hands as the people of yore knew the Power of the hand. The ancient Hindu teachings talk about eating food with your hands, feeds not only the body but also the mind and the spirit. The hands are considered the most important organs of action. It is mentioned in the Vedic prayer-“Karagre Vasate Lakshmi Karamule Sarasvati Karamadhye Sada Gouri Prabhate Karadarsanam”, which means on the tip of your fingers is Goddess Lakshmi; on the base of your fingers is Goddess Sarasvati; in the middle of your fingers is Gouri Parvati. In this manner, look at your palm and while looking at the palm, thus sanctifying all the actions that will be done during the day. Thus, one prays in the morning to reinforce the attitude that all actions are performed as a service to the Lord. This is one simple explanation through a prayer. There is also another scientific reason from the Vedic texts and Ayurveda that our hands and feet are said to be the channels of the five elements. Each finger is an extension of one of the five elements. Through the thumb - space; forefinger- air; mid-finger-fire; ring finger-water and through the little finger - earth. While taking the food into the mouth, each finger aids in the conversion of food, before it passes on to the internal digestive system. Gathering the fingertips as they touch the food stimulates the five elements and invites Agni (fire) to bring forth the digestive juices. As well as improving digestion the person becomes more conscious of the tastes, textures and smells of the foods they are eating, which all adds to the pleasure of eating and healthy living. With the knowledge and scientific reasoning behind eating with the hands explained, let us enjoy the benefits of eating with hands with a higher awakening. Now even etiquette experts say it's acceptable to eat with your hands except that you don’t lick them in public!

Dealing with pet loss

      The English novelist George Eliot said “Animals are such agreeable friends. They ask no questions and pass no criticisms.” A wonderful statement that describes the unconditional love that these wonderful beings give us. And when we lose them the grief is as much as you would feel when you lose a person close to you.   It is no wonder that people experience intense grief at the loss of a pet and the feeling of grief following a loss is completely normal. There are several ways that pet owners can help themselves and  move forward after the loss of a pet.   1. Get back to your daily routine You probably wake up and take your pet out on its routine walks , continue that routine and also when you have specific schedule for your pet’s need,replace it with an alternate routine to get over it. Sometimes pet owners are used to a schedule that was based on their animal's needs.   2. Farewell ceremony If you have friends who also have loved the pet and have played with it ,you could have a farewell ceremony and have talk about him/her and have them share a few things which would help you feel better.   3. Photos or videos There are many ways you could preserve your pets memories alike  photos, scrapbooks, home videos & collages. The latest being the Facebook and Instagram where you can permanently share your pets pictures in the digital form.   4. Help Children cope with the loss A child is devastated with a loss of pet and the best thing to do is to be honest with him/her about the death, depending on the age of the child. Assure them that the pet has moved on and is no longer in pain and if the older ones are there just spend some quiet time with them reassuring them.   6. Get another pet This again depends as to how the previous pet has passed away. If it was sudden then it’s better not to get a new pet, as the grieving would take time and you can’t focus on the new one. If the pet has aged and passed away then you could consider and get another one to replace the pet  and move on.

We don’t count our blessings as in what we already have, like our job, our loving parents, our home, the vehicle we drive, the beautiful sky and probably everything under the sun that makes you happy.   It's important to recognize and express gratitude for the fact that “everything” in your life is a miracle, a creation that you created.   The Power of Gratitude is an extremely important aspect of attracting the Abundance and Happiness that you desire and deserve in your life.   How does the Power of Gratitude work?   When you are in a sincere state of gratitude your energy (vibrational resonance) is one of acceptance and harmony. You resonate and as a result project a much higher vibrational frequency which is exactly what attracts to you the events, conditions, and circumstances that you desire.
