  • 2 suicides in 1 hr in IIT Madras

      In a shocking incident, two women in separate incidents have committed suicide at the Indian Institute of Technology's Madras campus on Wednesday in a span of approximately time frame of one hour. In the first incident 34-year-old postdoctoral research scholar P Maheswari’s body was found hanging in her hostel room. Maheswari, a resident of Pondicherry, was staying in Sabarmathi hostel. Her body was found in the hostel room around 4pm by her friends after they peeped into her room after they failed to find her anywhere else in the campus. Police said that there is no suicide note found and the reason for the drastic step is yet to be probed.   But on inquiring with her friends they were told that she was upset that her husband was not visiting her at the hostel. In the other incident, G Vijalakshmi, 47, who was the wife of assistant professor Ganesan was found dead at their quarters on the IIT campus. The couple had two children and after preliminary investigation police said that the Professor's wife was worried about the health of her elder son and it is also being reported that she has earlier also tried to commit suicide. Condoling the scholar’s death, IIT-M announced full cooperation to officials in the case.

    Britain ex-PM has Hyderabadi food as last dinner

      Who doesn't relish the spicy Hyderabad food. Looks like the outgoing Prime Minister of Britain is also a fan of our food. David Cameron Britain’s outgoing Prime Minister has had Indian food such as Hyderabadi Saffron Chicken, Kashmiri Rogan Josh and Samosas. A restaurant in central London has tweeted saying that they have delivered these dishes to Cameron as he has his last supper at the 10 10 Downing Street home.   According to the manager of the hotel, dishes including Hyderabadi Saffron Chicken, Kashmiri Rogan Josh, Nasheeli Gost, KT Mixed Grill (Lamb and Chicken), Chicken Zalfrazi, Saag Alloo, Saag Paneer, Palak Gost, Veg Samosas, Naan bread and Rice among other dishes were ordered. Cameron has often spoken of his love for Indian food, which he says he likes “pretty hot”. 49-year-old Cameron with his wife Samantha Sheffield, daughters Nancy Gwen and Florence Rose Endellion, and son Arthur Elwen will be moving to a new privately rented home in central London as their own home in Notting Hill area of the city is not yet vacant.

    Father kills 6yrs daughter for mistake in counting

      In a gruesome incident a six-year-old girl was reportedly choked to death by her father who became extremely angry over her inability to count numbers. This incident took place on July 9 at a village 250 km from Aurangabad, when Sanjay Kute was checking his 6 year old daughter Bharti's homework and at one point when she couldn't count numbers, the angry father beat her up badly and then forced her to swallow an onion as punishment.   The police said, "Bharti recited numerals from 1 to 12, but stumbled thereafter, which enraged Raju. He was so livid that he took an onion and stuffed it in her throat, following which she choked to death". He then quietly buried his daughter's body near a crematorium near his place without anyone knowing about it in a bid to escape from the crime. But finally his wife who witnessed the incident with her son, mustered the courage to alert the police about this inhuman behaviour and lodge a case against her husband who had now been caught by the police.

    Sushma Swaraj tweets wedding photos on Anniversary!

      External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj celebrates her wedding anniversary on Wednesday. She also celebrated the occasion with her twitter followers by posting her wedding pictures for them and also thanked her followers and her well wishers for the wishes. The picture shows Ms Swaraj as a bride with her husband, senior Supreme Court lawyer Swaraj Kaushal. It has been 'liked' almost 4700 times so far. The comments thread is filled with congratulatory messages from followers - one asked, "Do you get the day off?".   Sushma Swaraj is one of the most active ministers on Twitter. She has more than 5.8 Million followers on Twitter. And is also known to reuniting a number of families and reaching out tohelp families in distress abroad. She tweeted, "Thanks for your greetings and good wishes on our wedding anniversary. @sushmaswaraj & @GovernorSwaraj". She recently reassured actor Akshay Kumar, who tweeted her, that everything was being done to evacuate Indians from South Sudan.

    Less Flight Cancellation charges from Aug 1st

      The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has revised norms that caps ticket cancellation charges. From August 1, the new norms that caps ticket cancellation charges and bars airlines from levying additional amount for refund process are coming into force. And also the carriers would have to indicate in an unambiguous manner the amount of refund admissible on cancellation of a ticket. Aviation regulator DGCA said, "Under no circumstances, the airline shall levy cancellation charge more than the basic fare plus fuel surcharge".It also added that, "This provision shall also be applicable for all types of fares offered including promos/special fares and where the basic fare is non-refundable".   This means that airlines and carriers will not be able to charge additional for cancellation of tickets more than the basic fare plus fuel surcharge. The amount and its break-up may be indicated on the ticket itself or through separate form used for the purpose. Also, the policy and amount of refund shall be displayed by the airlines on their respective websites.

    Rahul Gandhi thanks SC for making PM understand

      Prime Minister Narendra Modi was targeted by the Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi while he was talking about the verdict by Supreme Court on Arunachal Pradesh. Saying that it explains to him what democracy is. Earlier in the day the Supreme Court ordered the restoration of the Congress government in Arunachal Pradesh, quashing all orders given by the state Governor.   "Thank you Supreme Court for explaining to the Prime Minister what democracy is," he said in a post on Twitter. It has come as a big blow to the BJPand the Centre, as the Supreme Court quashed Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa's decision from December 2015 to advance the Legislative Assembly session by a month. This is a historic verdict as it is for the first time that the apex court has restored a state government that had been dismissed by the Centre under the President's rule. The apex court's verdict paves the way for the dismissed Congress government of Nabam Tuki to return to power.

    Akshay asks Sushma to do an 'Airlift' in Sudan

      Akshay Kumar has asked the Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj to evacuate Indians out of the troubled area of Sudan. Akshay Kumar won hearts for imparting awareness about the Iraq war and the evacuation of Indians from Kuwait when he played the role of an Indian businessman Ranjit Katyal, who lead the evacuation of his countrymen in the film inspired from a group of Indians who led the task in 1990. Now that Indian in South Sudan are facing a similar situation he is taking steps to garner attention towards the issue. The actor tweeted to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj requesting her to take speedy evacuation measures of Indians stuck in Juba.   The capital city is witnessing escalated violence due to clashes between anti and pro government forces. India has been putting in place an evacuation plan for its nationals from the war-torn country. He tweeted, "@SushmaSwaraj Ma'am request for speedy measures and actions to evacuate Indians stranded in Sudan. Prayers with them. #SaveIndiansInJuba" to which the Minister gave a positive reply saying, "Akshay Kumar ji - Pl do not worry. We are evacuating Indian nationals from Juba (South Sudan)." Akshay who was glad to receive a swift reply from the Minister tweeted, "Thank you Ma'am appreciate the promptness. Hoping to hear about the successful evacuation operation soon".

    Theresa May to become new British PM

      The current British PM David Cameron is set to formally tender resignation paving way for Theresa May to become new British PM. Theresa May will become Britain's 2nd woman PM, after Margaret Thatcher. May is preparing to promote a string of female Conservative colleagues, including into key cabinet positions, after she is invited by the Queen to form a new government on Wednesday. The appointments are intended to create a more gender-balanced cabinet.   May, who has been interior minister for six years and is seen by her supporters as a safe pair of hands to steer the country through the disruptive Brexit process. The incoming prime minister will announce the reshuffle on Wednesday after she moves into Downing Street with her husband, Philip. May will take up residence after the Queen will confirm her new role at the Buckingham Palace. Before the referendum, May had campaigned for Britain to remain in the EU. Since the vote, she has repeatedly said that "Brexit means Brexit" and her backers say she is determined to make the exit a success.

    Kejriwal's wife to take VRS from I-T Department

      Arvind Kejriwal's wife Sunita an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) has taken voluntary retirement from the Indian Revenue Service, after working for nearly 22 years in the income tax department. She was last posted as Commissioner of I-T in the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in Delhi and had sought voluntary retirement (VRS) earlier this year. According to sources an official order has now been issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the cadre controlling authority of the department. As she has served over 20 years in service she will be able to enjoy her pension benefits.   The order issued by the Finance Ministry said, "Upon considering her notice for voluntary retirement from government service under FR-56 K, the President of India is pleased to allow Sunita Kejriwal IRS (IT-93072) CIT (DR) ITAT, New Delhi to retire from government service with effect from July 15, 2016." and it also added that, "Sunita Kejriwal’s attention is invited to Rule 10 of Central Civil Services (pension) rules, 1972, that if she wishes to take commercial employment within one year from the date of her retirement, she shall seek government’s prior permission.”

    Latecomer Cricketers should pay $50 fine:Kumble

      In a rather unique way of instilling the discipline in the Indian Cricket team, the newly appointed coach Anil Kumble has informed the cricketers that if they are late for the Indian team bus, they should be ready to pay up $50. He has also conveyed to them that an official meeting will be held every fourth day and that he is always there for any player who wants to come up to him to have a chat. In his first meeting in the Caribbean, Kumble also tried to streamline the role of the support staff. For example, masseurs have been given a fixed schedule and players can no longer go in asking for massage whenever they want.   To makes sure it’s not a one-sided affair, Kumble has already jotted down some suggestions and complaints by the players. It is learnt that while spelling out the roadmap during the Bengaluru meeting, which was also attended by Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli, M S Dhoni, Kumble had requested the BCCI to handle their logistics in better manner. In order to make the player unwind in the busy schedule it is being reported that Kumble has scheduled a scuba diving session for the Indian cricketers in the coming days. It is being said that Kumble wants players to understand the importance of discipline and, at the same time, give them freedom.

    SRK to release Sania's autobiography in Hyd

      India's tennis sensation Sania Mirza will be releasing her autobiography today in her hometown Hyderabad. Sania's autobiography titled 'Ace Against Odds' will be unveiledby none other than Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan at the official launch that will take place in the city on Wednesday. The book which was originally launched a week ago has all the important events and her achievements, Imran Mirza, father of Sania Mirza said. While the book will be unveiled by Shah Rukh Khan in Hyderabad, Salman Khan is expected to unveil the book in Mumbai.   Her father said that the story, with 40 chapters starts from the time when she was four or five years old till date and that it took more than 5 years for her to pen her life story. He also added, "It is her book and her views and covers till this point of her life. It also touches on all the controversies of her life...everything has been covered...on her life including her career". The book will also be released all over the nation with the launch events being held in various other cities as well.

    NITI Aayog chief could be next RBI Governor

      With a number of names doing the rounds to get one of the most coveted jobs in the country, it seems like the chief of NIIT Aayog could soon clinch the role of the next Reserve Bank of India Governor. The 64-year- old Panagariya heads the government's main economic advisory body NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India). He is also India's key negotiator at G20 summit and has been Professor of Indian Political Economy at Columbia University. Beyond his impressive academic credentials, Panagariya also has the advantage of being an insider in the government for over one-and-a-half years. But the only catch here could be that as NITI Aayog chief, Panagariya holds a Cabinet minister rank. But, the RBI governor has cabinet secretary rank. So, if Panagariya is appointed as RBI governor, he will be, in fact, taking a huge demotion. The other primary contenders for the position are the former RBI deputy governors Subir Gokarn and Rakesh Mohan. Gokarn is, an Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund, a position also previously held by Mohan. It is being said that the name of the person to head RBI will be made public in a week's time.

    SC indicts ex-CBI chief in Coal Scam

      A Supreme Court-appointed committee has indicted former CBI director Ranjit Sinha of trying to influence the coal block allocation case. According to the reports submitted in a sealed cover to the court alleges that Mr Sinha did meet some of the coal scam accused at his home in Delhi. Allegations of misdemeanor exploded against the former top investigator just as he was retiring two years ago, after senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan submitted in court a list of visitors to Mr Sinha's home. "The committee has found that Sinha met the accused and this influenced his decisions," Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the court on Tuesday. He, however, opposed registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Sinha, saying all ofCBI's decisions in the case have since been vetted by the chief vigilance commissioner.  Mr Sinha has however denied any wrongdoing and said that he never granted favours to persons he allegedly met at his home. The future course of action against Mr.Sinha will be soon decided by the honourable court.

    MEA to evacuate Indians from Sudan

      External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday said that India has formed a task force to take stock of situation of security of Indians in Sudan. Swaraj said the evacuation scheme is fully ready and if the situation worsens then the government will not delay and immediately evacuate Indians from there. The Indian embassy in South Sudan had asked Indians stranded there to stay calm, assuring them that they are in constant touch with authorities in India and all options are being considered to provide relief to them amid heavy fighting between South Sudan's army and former rebels. The minister said, "The situation in South Sudan deteriorated suddenly in the past three days. We have constituted a task force to constantly study the emerging situation in South Sudan and to closely tab on the occurrences there. The task force held a meeting in the morning. There are around 600 Indians in South Sudan, of them 450 are in Juba (capital city of South Sudan) and nearly 150 are outside Juba. At present, the fighting is taking place in Juba. According to official data, there are a few hundred Indians in South Sudan. Some of them have set up businesses in Juba and others are working for various companies. A small number of Indian nationals also work in Christian missionary organizations in that country.

    Cleanliest cities award goes to Mysuru, Alappuzha

      According to a survey based on solid waste management practices in towns across the country the places which topped the list were Alappuzha in Kerala, Panaji and Mysuru. A latest rating by Centre for Science and Environment said that Alappuzha, Panaji and Mysuru are three of the cleanest cities in India, with municipal waste management systems that actually work. The country's capital Delhi has appeared at the bottom of the list of 14 along with Chandigarh and Bengaluru. The survey found that the cities, figured at the bottom, like Delhi, Chandigarh and Bengaluru have managed to remain clean, but only by sweeping their garbage under the carpet. 53 cities with a population of above 10 lakhs each and 22capitals that do not have that much population were selected for the survey. Mysuru, Chandigarh, Tiruchirapalli, New Delhi Municipal Council, Visakhapatnam, Surat, Rajkot, Gangtok, Pimpri Chindwad and Greater Mumbai had emerged as the top 10 cities in terms of sanitation and hygiene in the government survey. But this particular survey was, however, limited to 14 cities, It tried to find out what actually makes these cities clean and how the best practices would act as a guide for future policy.

    SC might soon ban 'Sardar' jokes

      Hearing petitions seeking a ban on circulation of jokes about the Sikh community, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court asked the Sikh bodies as to what can be done to imposea ban on the hugely popular Santa-Banta jokes. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) along with other bodies claiming to be representatives of Sikhs had earlier approached the apex court seeking a ban on jokes that project members of the community in poor light. The apex court has asked the Sikh bodies to come up with a mechanism, within the next six weeks, to ban 'sardar' jokes. ''We may say do not crack such jokes. But then how do we enforce the order? Of course we do not want you to be ridiculed, but please tell us in what way we can do something. You come out with suggestions within six weeks," a bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur has told the Sikh community representatives in the court. In February, during the hearing of a case pertaining to over 5,000 websites which feature jokes on Sikhs, the court had asked how to determine whether a particular joke is derogatory.

    Indian hockey team to Rio Olympics announced!

      Senior goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has been given the coveted opportunity to lead the Indian Hockey team in its bid  to secure a medal in the upcoming Rio Olympics. The team, under his leadership, ended up with a silver medal at the six-nation Champions Trophy hockey tournament in London. Sreejesh had a good tournament both as a player and captain as India had their best performance in the 38 year history of the tournament. The team played a brilliant final where they held eventual champions Australia to a goalless draw in the regulation time before losing in a controversial shoot-out. The team for Rio was announced today.  Sardar, who has been replaced by Sreejesh as the captain of the national team, for a number of years led the team and also led the team in London 2012. While Sardar was rested for the Champions Trophy where India produced their best-ever show. SV Sunil has been named vice-captain. India is sending its biggest continent to the Olympics this year.

    Debt of Telangana state crosses Rs 1 lakh Cr

      The debt burden of the Telangana state has increased manifolds. According to the recent reports it has crossed the Rs 1 lakh-crore mark. At present, it stands at Rs 1,04,767 crore. It was recently claimed by the Telangana state Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao that the state's own tax revenues earnings have increased by 27 per cent during April-May 2016, over same period last year, it failed to match the rate at which the expenditure has increased. On the other hand the debt burden has resulted in government spending nearly Rs 800 crore towards payment of interest alone to various financial institutions. The subsidy burden has increased to Rs 30,000 crore due to populist schemes, even as the increased salary bill and mounting expenditure on irrigation projects is forcing the government to secure loans every month. According to credible sources the state government's own tax revenue earnings should be over Rs 6,000 crore per month to meet the current expenditure but it managed to reach only Rs 4,300 crore per month during the last four months.

    Pak bride goes on honeymoon without husband!

      It was just a scene out of the Bollywood hit movie Queen for a newlywed from Lahore, Pakistan. Huma Mobin and her husband, Arsalaan Sever Butt had been married for seven months and were all set to go to Greece. But as luck would have it, Butt's visa was not approved by the Greece Embassy on time. While the bride initially decided to cancel the trip, but as the trip was all paid for and practically everything was set, Mobin decided to go without her husband but with her in-laws. On her honeymoon accompanied by her in-laws she did miss her husband but decided to make the most of her unusual situation. So she did what every woman on her honeymoon alone would do, click adorable pictures, and that showed her husband how much she was missing him! She extended her hand in almost all her pictures seeming like she was holding him. When asked about it she said, "I am grateful for my amazing in-laws with whom missing my husband was only a thought in the back of my head. Although, while clicking the pictures, he was surely missed!".
