  • SC indicts ex-CBI chief in Coal Scam

      A Supreme Court-appointed committee has indicted former CBI director Ranjit Sinha of trying to influence the coal block allocation case. According to the reports submitted in a sealed cover to the court alleges that Mr Sinha did meet some of the coal scam accused at his home in Delhi. Allegations of misdemeanor exploded against the former top investigator just as he was retiring two years ago, after senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan submitted in court a list of visitors to Mr Sinha's home. "The committee has found that Sinha met the accused and this influenced his decisions," Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the court on Tuesday. He, however, opposed registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Sinha, saying all ofCBI's decisions in the case have since been vetted by the chief vigilance commissioner.  Mr Sinha has however denied any wrongdoing and said that he never granted favours to persons he allegedly met at his home. The future course of action against Mr.Sinha will be soon decided by the honourable court.

    MEA to evacuate Indians from Sudan

      External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday said that India has formed a task force to take stock of situation of security of Indians in Sudan. Swaraj said the evacuation scheme is fully ready and if the situation worsens then the government will not delay and immediately evacuate Indians from there. The Indian embassy in South Sudan had asked Indians stranded there to stay calm, assuring them that they are in constant touch with authorities in India and all options are being considered to provide relief to them amid heavy fighting between South Sudan's army and former rebels. The minister said, "The situation in South Sudan deteriorated suddenly in the past three days. We have constituted a task force to constantly study the emerging situation in South Sudan and to closely tab on the occurrences there. The task force held a meeting in the morning. There are around 600 Indians in South Sudan, of them 450 are in Juba (capital city of South Sudan) and nearly 150 are outside Juba. At present, the fighting is taking place in Juba. According to official data, there are a few hundred Indians in South Sudan. Some of them have set up businesses in Juba and others are working for various companies. A small number of Indian nationals also work in Christian missionary organizations in that country.

    Cleanliest cities award goes to Mysuru, Alappuzha

      According to a survey based on solid waste management practices in towns across the country the places which topped the list were Alappuzha in Kerala, Panaji and Mysuru. A latest rating by Centre for Science and Environment said that Alappuzha, Panaji and Mysuru are three of the cleanest cities in India, with municipal waste management systems that actually work. The country's capital Delhi has appeared at the bottom of the list of 14 along with Chandigarh and Bengaluru. The survey found that the cities, figured at the bottom, like Delhi, Chandigarh and Bengaluru have managed to remain clean, but only by sweeping their garbage under the carpet. 53 cities with a population of above 10 lakhs each and 22capitals that do not have that much population were selected for the survey. Mysuru, Chandigarh, Tiruchirapalli, New Delhi Municipal Council, Visakhapatnam, Surat, Rajkot, Gangtok, Pimpri Chindwad and Greater Mumbai had emerged as the top 10 cities in terms of sanitation and hygiene in the government survey. But this particular survey was, however, limited to 14 cities, It tried to find out what actually makes these cities clean and how the best practices would act as a guide for future policy.

    SC might soon ban 'Sardar' jokes

      Hearing petitions seeking a ban on circulation of jokes about the Sikh community, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court asked the Sikh bodies as to what can be done to imposea ban on the hugely popular Santa-Banta jokes. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) along with other bodies claiming to be representatives of Sikhs had earlier approached the apex court seeking a ban on jokes that project members of the community in poor light. The apex court has asked the Sikh bodies to come up with a mechanism, within the next six weeks, to ban 'sardar' jokes. ''We may say do not crack such jokes. But then how do we enforce the order? Of course we do not want you to be ridiculed, but please tell us in what way we can do something. You come out with suggestions within six weeks," a bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur has told the Sikh community representatives in the court. In February, during the hearing of a case pertaining to over 5,000 websites which feature jokes on Sikhs, the court had asked how to determine whether a particular joke is derogatory.

    Indian hockey team to Rio Olympics announced!

      Senior goalkeeper PR Sreejesh has been given the coveted opportunity to lead the Indian Hockey team in its bid  to secure a medal in the upcoming Rio Olympics. The team, under his leadership, ended up with a silver medal at the six-nation Champions Trophy hockey tournament in London. Sreejesh had a good tournament both as a player and captain as India had their best performance in the 38 year history of the tournament. The team played a brilliant final where they held eventual champions Australia to a goalless draw in the regulation time before losing in a controversial shoot-out. The team for Rio was announced today.  Sardar, who has been replaced by Sreejesh as the captain of the national team, for a number of years led the team and also led the team in London 2012. While Sardar was rested for the Champions Trophy where India produced their best-ever show. SV Sunil has been named vice-captain. India is sending its biggest continent to the Olympics this year.

    Debt of Telangana state crosses Rs 1 lakh Cr

      The debt burden of the Telangana state has increased manifolds. According to the recent reports it has crossed the Rs 1 lakh-crore mark. At present, it stands at Rs 1,04,767 crore. It was recently claimed by the Telangana state Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao that the state's own tax revenues earnings have increased by 27 per cent during April-May 2016, over same period last year, it failed to match the rate at which the expenditure has increased. On the other hand the debt burden has resulted in government spending nearly Rs 800 crore towards payment of interest alone to various financial institutions. The subsidy burden has increased to Rs 30,000 crore due to populist schemes, even as the increased salary bill and mounting expenditure on irrigation projects is forcing the government to secure loans every month. According to credible sources the state government's own tax revenue earnings should be over Rs 6,000 crore per month to meet the current expenditure but it managed to reach only Rs 4,300 crore per month during the last four months.

    Pak bride goes on honeymoon without husband!

      It was just a scene out of the Bollywood hit movie Queen for a newlywed from Lahore, Pakistan. Huma Mobin and her husband, Arsalaan Sever Butt had been married for seven months and were all set to go to Greece. But as luck would have it, Butt's visa was not approved by the Greece Embassy on time. While the bride initially decided to cancel the trip, but as the trip was all paid for and practically everything was set, Mobin decided to go without her husband but with her in-laws. On her honeymoon accompanied by her in-laws she did miss her husband but decided to make the most of her unusual situation. So she did what every woman on her honeymoon alone would do, click adorable pictures, and that showed her husband how much she was missing him! She extended her hand in almost all her pictures seeming like she was holding him. When asked about it she said, "I am grateful for my amazing in-laws with whom missing my husband was only a thought in the back of my head. Although, while clicking the pictures, he was surely missed!".

    HC sets the height of Ganesha this Vinayaka Chavithi

      Bhgyanagar Ganesh Utsav Committee and the state government were urged by the Hyderabad Hight court that the ideal height of 15ft must be maintained for all the Ganesh idols in all the pandals during Ganesh Chaturthi and that necessary steps should be taken that the height of the idols shall not exceed the ideal height specified. The division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Dilip B Bhosale and Justice P Naveen Rao also suggested that separate bins must be arranged at the lakes during immersion of Ganesh idols to dispose of the puja material instead of dumping it in the lakes along with idols. The Maharashtra government arranges such bins at the immersion points, Justice Bhosale added. In order to make the festival more eco friendly the bench told the state government and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to ensure that only natural colours are used in making of Ganesh idols. While asking the government to file a report detailing the steps taken for reduction of the height of the idols and also cleaning of Hussainsagar after the immersions.

    Man quits Govt job grows Aloe Vera and turns crorepati!

    In a general scenario most of the youngsters these days are struggling to get a Government job and once they do get it, they tend to feel more secured and also feel settled in life. But for Harish Dhandev from Jaisalmer, it was completely opposite. He had a government job. But he was not satisfied. Hailing from a family of farmers, he wanted to do something different and started cultivating aloe vera and other crops on his 120-acre farmland. The turning point of his life came about when he visited an agri expo in Delhi which propelled him to take that decision which changed his life for good. The current turnover from his farmland ranges from Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crore per annum. He has also opened his own company 'Naturelo Agro' at a place 45 kilometres from Jaisalmer. This variety of Aloe Vera grown in his farm is so good that it is in high demand in Brazil, Hong Kong and America too. The Aloe vera grown in Thar Desert is being supplied in huge quantity to Patanjali Food Products Limited for making aloe vera juice as well.

    Britain left with only one choice for PM

      In a latest twist in the developments towards the election of the next Britain Prime Minister after David Cameron had quit after the result of 'Brexit', Britain is left with just one candidate for the position of the Prime Minister. Energy minister Andrea Leadsom abruptly withdrew from the contest to succeed David Cameron as Britain's prime minister on Monday, leaving her rival Theresa May as the only candidate.  Mrs Leadsom said, "The best interests of our country inspired me to stand for the leadership. I believe that in leaving the EU a bright future awaits, where all our people can share in a new prosperity, freedom and democracy."    The two women had been due to contest a ballot of around 150,000 Conservative party members, with the result to be declared by Sept. 9, but the shock announcement would pave the way for May to become the next Prime Minister sooner than expected. May, 59, who has served as interior minister for the past six years, is now set to become Britain's second female prime minister after Margaret Thatcher. May favoured the 'Remain' side during last month's referendum campaign.

    Sikh students union to take Kejriwal to court

      In some more trouble for Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party which has set out to contest in the upcoming elections, the students union, All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF), on Monday decided to move court against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for allegedly hurting religious sentiments after the AAP convener's photo appeared on the front page of a weekly showing him as 'Nihang' (belonging to a martial tradition begun by Sikh Gurus, are known for their bravery in the battlefield). The president of the federation Karnail Singh Peermohammed said, "We are taking a serious note of it.   The photo showing Kejriwal as 'Nihang' has hurt the sentiments of Sikhs". He also added that the Delhi unit of the federation has been directed to file a case against Kejriwal under IPC Section 295 A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings). Recently the Youth Manifesto of AAP showed the picture of Golden Temple with the party's symbol broom superimposed on it, which has created a lot of controversy and similar case of hurting religious sentiments of Sikhs was registered against them.

    SC asks Sahara chief to pay 300Crs or go to jail

      Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy's parole was extended by the Supreme Court on Monday till August 3. But the court also had something big to add to the judgement. While warning him that he has been granted parole on humanitarian ground and it shouldn't be misused. SC also asked the eminent businessman to pay Rs 300 crore more. It has asked him to 'either pay or go back to jail.'  Roy was granted parole on May 6 this year on account of hismother's death, which was extended by two months on May 11, that is till July 11 and the court asked him to deposit Rs 200 crores with SEBI.   The Sahara chief was sent to jail on May 4, 2014. Subrata Roy has been in Tihar jail since the last two years in the case of defrauding small investors of Rs 36,000 crore by way of a ponzi scheme. Out of this amount, he has paid up to Rs 12,000 crore to Sebi in lieu of the financial irregularities. The apex court had expressed disbelief and demanded to know why he chose to stay in jail when his assets could have covered the bail amount.

    Lalit Modi applies for Carribean citizenship

      Lalit Modi, who was the ex-vice president of the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) and the former chief of Indian Premier League has applied for applied for citizenship along with his family in Saint Lucia in the Caribbean islands. He is currently  in the United Kingdom and has applied for citizenship under their investment scheme. Modi has a number of cases pending against him in various courts of law in India. If the Indian unit of the Interpol sends an adverse report, he is unlikely to get the citizenship.   Saint Lucia in the Caribbeans is considered to be one of the best tax haven in the world. It maintains highest banking secrecy standards. Despite its reputation of being a popular tax haven, St Lucia is believed to be selective about giving citizenship and follows a due diligence process before giving it. In order to be granted the citizenship under this scheme the person should not be having any criminal records registered against him and also a through background check is done to ensure there are no discrepancies in the side of the applicants.

    IIT-B students to wear Khadi on convocation!

      In a bid to get the feel of nationalism in the students, the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay has chosen Khadi uttarias or angavastrams" made of honey comb towel cotton khadi for the convocation ceremony of its graduating batch. According to the sources the IIT Bombay has placed an order for 3,500 convocation robes made of khadi cotton, inculcating the feeling of nationalism in the students.   In a statement issued this is what the ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises had to say about the latest development, "IIT- Mumbai chooses Khadi as their convocation robe. After Gujarat University, now khadi has also made a niche in the hearts of authorities of premiere Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai". Khadi has been at the centre of Narendra Modi’s plan of reviving the traditional textile industry and the prime minister has repeatedly exhorted the public to increase its use of the fabric, especially through his monthly radio address, Mann ki Baat.

    Venkaiah Naidu does surprise check in Ministry..

      Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, who took charge last week as the new Information and Broadcasting minister took his ministry's top officials by surprise when he made an unannounced punctuality and cleanliness check early this morning at the official premises. According to a senior official at the ministry, "The Minister personally checked the rooms of several officers and their supporting staff. He also looked into the cleanliness of washrooms in the offices.   He also inspected the condition of electrical fittings in the various rooms and corridors in the building". The minister took to his twitter page to give information on the check, he tweeted, "Made a surprise check of attendance and cleanliness at Shastri Bhawan today at sharp 9:30 am....Directed concerned Joint Secretaries to review issues related to punctuality and cleanliness in the offices on daily basis". He also added by saying that an explanation was sought from those who were not present at the time of inspection at the Office.

    Sushma reunites Russian lady with her Indian family!

      In yet another story of a family reuniting, Sushma Swaraj played a very crucial role. Olga Efimenkova who is from Russia was forced to move out of her marital home in Agra,Uttar Pradesh. Her protests at the home of her in laws not being answered and the police not coming to her rescue she resorted to her last option which was asking External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj for some intervention and help. Sushma Swaraj then tweeted to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav requesting him to help the Russian national who was thrown out of the house by her mother-in-law, the distressed woman was finally reunited with her family.   Within hours action was taken and the lady and her daughter were reunited with the family. She said, "I want to thank Sushma Swaraj ji for taking prompt action. Sushma ji through her tweet directed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to help us. I want to thank both of them. An FIR has been lodged, finally", she added, "My mother-in-law keeps on asking for money, says that I'm from poor family and didn't bring anything along". Efimenkova married Vikrant Singh Chandel in 2011 has been sitting outside her in-laws house on a hunger strike, claiming that she, her husband and daughter have been barred from entering the house and that they were demanding dowry from her.

    Telangana to get its own 'Foreign Minister' soon

      In a first of its kind for a state, Telangana will be soon getting a foreign minister of its own, at least that is what Chief Minister c has planned for the state. In a move aimed at promoting the image of Telangana overseas, the state is poised to have its own 'external affairs' ministry and the chief minister is set to make his son K Taraka Rama Rao, the first 'foreign minister' of the state according to top officials in the government. According to sources, the state government is planning to formulate its own NRI policy, the highlight of which is a proposal to establish a separate ministry for promoting Telangana off-shore. And it is but natural that the mantle falls on KTR, who is now incharge of NRI affairs.   It is a known fact that the external affairs ministry is an exclusive preserve of the Union government. Bura Narasaiah Goud, Bhuvanagiri MP said, "It is a long pending demand from Telangana diaspora across the world that state must have a dedicated ministry for foreign and NRI affairs. The ministry will promote Telangana as an investment destination and market it the best among the industrialized states in India. And KTR is best suited for the purpose".

    Officer's Racial attack on woman in Delhi Airport

      In yet another case of racial attack in Delhi, a woman from Manipur was allegedly subjected to racial harassment at the Delhi airport. The woman from Manipur has accused an immigration officer at Delhi airport of saying she "didn't look Indian". Monika Khangembam who had to face the racial attack said that she was asked questions like "How many states are there in India?" and how many states does Manipur share its borders with and which are those, she was asked these questions apparently because the immigrations officer wanted to know how much of an Indian is she. She took to Facebook to vent out her anger against the way she was treated for being from Northeast.   She is a corporate communications professional who was travelling to South Korea for a conference. Though she was getting late to catch her flight and she informed the officer about the same, she was not let off any time soon because the officer kept asking such questions and insisted on her answering them before catching the flight. Monika is planning to file a complaint once she returns from Seoul after 15 days. The authorities however said that there was no official complaint made and hence he they can only conduct an enquiry once they receive a complain.

    PM entertains Tanzanians with his drumming skills!

      Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on his four-nation tour of Africa had reached Tanzania from South Africa on the third leg of his African tour. On his arrival he received a 21-gun salute from members of the uniformed forces before inspecting a guardof honour. But the highlight of the event was when the Prime Minister reached the State House, Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli's residence. Modi joined Magufuli to play traditional Tanzania drums at a colorful ceremony. "New beats to the India Africa rhythm! PM Narendra Modi and President John Magufuli play the drum," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.   Though half way through the drumming, Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli stopped playing the drums, but there was no stopping for our Prime Minister, who kept drumming and entertaining the crowd and the President then resumed the drumming again when he saw the Indian leader was in no mood to stop.Modi's skills as a drummer was for the first time displayed in Japan in September 2014 when he joined the Japanese percussionists to perform a 'jugalbandi' with them.
