In a shocking incident, two women in separate incidents have committed suicide at the Indian Institute of Technology's Madras campus on Wednesday in a span of approximately time frame of one hour. In the first incident 34-year-old postdoctoral research scholar P Maheswari’s body was found hanging in her hostel room. Maheswari, a resident of Pondicherry, was staying in Sabarmathi hostel. Her body was found in the hostel room around 4pm by her friends after they peeped into her room after they failed to find her anywhere else in the campus. Police said that there is no suicide note found and the reason for the drastic step is yet to be probed.
But on inquiring with her friends they were told that she was upset that her husband was not visiting her at the hostel. In the other incident, G Vijalakshmi, 47, who was the wife of assistant professor Ganesan was found dead at their quarters on the IIT campus. The couple had two children and after preliminary investigation police said that the Professor's wife was worried about the health of her elder son and it is also being reported that she has earlier also tried to commit suicide. Condoling the scholar’s death, IIT-M announced full cooperation to officials in the case.
