Infosys techie killer arrested;attempts suicide

  Infosys employee Swathi's murderer was finally zeroed in and held by the police in Chennai. He was arrested from his native place of Sengottai in Tirunelveli late on Friday night. The accused, also a 24-year-old techie named Ramkumar, reportedly attempted suicide as the police were catching him. He tried to kill himself by slitting his throat when the police team surrounded the house in Meenakshipuram village where he was hiding. Ramkumar, who moved to Chennai three months ago, was living in a rented house in Choolaimedu in Swathi's neighborhood. Police say that he was infatuated with her. Swathi, an employee of Infosys, was hacked to death around 6.45am at Nungambakkam railway station on June 24 by the alleged accused.

Bolt suffers injury,withdraws from Olympic trails

  Two-time 100-meter Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt withdrew from the Jamaican Olympic Trials on Friday after suffering a Grade 1 hamstring tear. He complained of a tight hamstring after his preliminary race where he won his 100-meter semifinal heat with a time of 10.04 seconds. The pain resurfaced after his semifinal run. Bolt had qualified for the 100-meter final on Friday night, and was scheduled to compete in the 200-meter events Saturday and Sunday. There are still chances of him appearing in the Olympics as he could apply for a medical exemption and still run in Rio. Earlier in the 2012 London Games, he set the 100 Olympic record of 9.63 and broke the world record in the 400 relay with a time of 36.84.

Witness speaks about Infosys girl's murder

In a chilling recount of what has happened on that unfortunate day when Sawthi, and Infosys employee was killed, an eye witness has explained what exactly happened on that day for the first time. D Tamilarasan, a teacher who lives in the samelocality as Swathi, said a man had slapped her five times at the Nungambakkam railway station. “He is not the same man that is seen in the CCTV footage. On the day of the brutal attack, I was a little away from the crime site," he said. He added, "I watched her gory death from a distance of about 50 yards for about three minutes." This is the first ever eyewitness account of the brutal murder of software engineer S Swathi on June 24 at the railway station.

Fresh notices to Vadra's firm from ED

Fresh notices were issued to the firm linked to Robert Vadra, son in law of Congress President Sonia Gandhi by the the Enforcement Directorate(ED). these were issued in connection with its probe into alleged money laundering in a land deal in Rajasthan's Bikaner district.Officials said the firm, Ms Skylight Hospitality, has been given two weeks time to furnish financial statements and other documents of the firm to the investigating officer (IO) of the case. The second notice had to be issues as the last week, a lawyer had made appearance before the ED in response to the first notice sent in the case but it was dismissed by the probe agency as "unauthorised" as he was neither carrying any relevant papers nor an authorisation letter from the company about him being their representative.

Uniform Civil code could be implemented soon

According to sources, in a big development the government could soon implement Uniform Civil Code. It has asked the law commission to submit a report on the viability of implementing it in the near future. Uniform civil code is a common law or code for personal matters like marriage, inheritance etc which will replace the separate codes that are currently being followed by Hindus and Muslims. The law commission head Balbir Singh Chauhan has said that he will speak to all the stake holders and political parties before putting it down in the form of a report. As per the Constitution, "The state shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India,” says article 44 of the directive principles of state policy.

New twist in Kumble-Shastri controversy

In a new twist to the Anil Kumble and Ravi Shastri tale, Shastri has tendered his resignation from the post as media representative in ICC's prestigious Cricket Committee. The twist here is that the chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee is Anil Kumble. Who got ahead of Shastri in the race to become the Indian cricket team's coach, which according to sources had some help of Sourav Ganguly as well. In a statement, when asked as to why he resigned he said, "I have already submitted my resignation. There are personal commitments and I have been there for six years". Though the official reason is that he is busy with media commitments as commentator, TV expert and columnist but there is intense speculation that the former all-rounder may have resigned as he is yet to come to terms with rejection from being the new coach of the Indian team, which he was working on earlier.

Torrential rains in Uttarakhand kills 30

Torrential rains and landslides lashed Chamoli and Pittoragarh districts of Uttarakhand on Friday, killing 30 people.  The Centre on Friday rushed rescue teams of National Disaster Response Force to Uttarakhand. The Alaknanda river rose above the danger level mark after receiving rainfall upto 54 mm in the last 24 hours. Union home minister Rajnath Singh spoke to chief minister Harish Rawat on phone and took stock of the situation arising out of the cloudburst and heavy rains various parts of the state. He has assured all the help required from the centre's side. He said, "NDRF teams have been rushed to the areas affected by cloudburst in Uttarakhand. Additional teams of NDRF are also put on alert".People are being being moved out of low-lying areas by the officials and the rescue teams. The Chief Minister has announced a compensation of 2 lakh rupees for the kin of the deceased.

Tamil Nadu stands first in Indian tourist destinations

  If you thought that Goa, Kerala, or Karnataka are the top tourist destinations then you are mistaken. Tamil Nadu has managed to lure tourist, both Indian and foreign, more than any other state in India. Tamil Nadu has topped the popularity charts for tourists for the second year in a row. When it come to foreign tourists, 4.68 million of them visited the state in 2015 which is again higher than in 2014, when 4.66 million of them visited. And 333.5 million Indians came visiting the state in 2015.   Maharashtra came second with 4.41 million foreign tourists, thanks mainly to Mumbai's busy airport that acts as a gateway for India. Uttar Pradesh with the famous Taj Mahal attracted 3.1 million tourists and is in the third place while Delhi with 2.38 million foreign tourists came in fourth. Others states that are in the top 10 included West Bengal (1.49 million), Rajasthan (1.48 mill), Kerala (0.98 million), Bihar (0.92 million), Karnataka (0.64 million) and Goa(0.54 million)

Pay less for excess baggage from today!

  In a good news for flyers From July 1 onwards, they will be required to pay up lesser money for excess checked-in baggage up to a certain limit as the revised fee structure comes into effect. Under the new tariff structure, only Rs 100 would be charged per additional kilogramme of checked-in baggage up to a certain level compared to the existing charge of Rs 300 per kg.   Currently, all domestic airlines allow free checked-in baggage up to 15 kg. Beyond that, they charge Rs 300 per extra kg expect for Air India which allows 23kgs.  The reduced rates, announced by the government earlier this month, were initially scheduled to come into force from June 15. However, the implementation date was extended to July 1 by aviation regulator DGCA after airlines sought more time to upgrade their system.

Above 75yrs old Minister could be dropped

  In the impending cabinet reshuffle, the government could show the door to the ministers who have just turned 75years or are older than that age. This is being speculated as BJP took a decision recently to drop two ministers from the Madhya Pradesh government on the grounds that they have crossed 75 years or age.   Union Minister Najma Heptulla turned 75 in April last year and her colleague Kalraj Mishra turns 75 on Friday. According to sources  states like UP and Assam are likely to get more representation in the Council of Ministers while some ministers of state may be promoted up the ranks. As UP would be going to polls early next year the party is looking to promote its leaders from that region for better representation.

All monuments will be using Solar Power soon

  The Archaeological Survey of India is gearing up with an ambitious plan to install solar power panel system on rooftops of all the monumental sites in a move to light up ancient protected monuments. Officials said, "All the rooftops of the ASI protected monuments will come under the purview of the initiative. We will cover the rooftops with solar power panels to light up the area at night. It will help save on the electricity bills significantly".   As the fund for the project has already been allocated by the Ministry of Culture, the installation process will start from July-August this year only. The ASI which is engaged in protection and preservation of 3,686 protected monuments of national importance spread all over India will be initially installing 5MW to 25MW solar power units but will gradually increase the capacity of it depending on the requirement. The issue was taken up following decisions to illuminate all the ASI monuments after sunset so that tourists can catch a view at night.

Kejriwal says his Ads cost less than Modi's clothes!

  In a bizarre attack on the Prime Minister,Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday claimed that, PM Modi never repeated clothes once worn and that each dress of the prime minister’s costs Rs 2 lakh. The AAP government’s advertising budget is less than the expenditure incurred on Prime Minister’s clothes over the last two years i what he said. Kejriwal at a meeting of editors said, "It is being said we have given advertising of Rs 526 crore. Completely false. We have released advertising worth Rs 76 crore. That’s it. Advertising expenditure of all departments of the Delhi government is less than the total expenditure on Modi’s clothes", is what he said.   Giving a detailed costing of Modi’s wardrobe, the Delhi CM added, “I can give you the calculation. One dress that Modi wears is worth Rs two lakh. He change clothes five times a day, (which comes to) 10 lakh rupees (per day). He never repeats his clothes, doesn’t wash them and reuse them. He has been in power for 700 days, that means he has spent Rs 70 crore on clothes alone. Five crore more on his other clothes”.

No more choosing flight mates for Air India Crew

  Air India's crew management system (CMS) will no longer entertain any requests from the cabin crew and pilots to pair up their particular favorite colleagues on their duties. The CMS, which pairs pilots and cabin crew for flights and prepares rosters, routinely gets requests from crew to be paired with specific members of their choice. The airlines does not want to take any chance in the future as two months ago an AI captain kept 110 passengers waiting on board an aircraft that was to fly from Chennai to Male, waiting for over two hours as he insisted on flying with a particular lady co-pilot. The airline has hence banned CMS from accepting such requests and warned of action against crew members who do so.

Record breaking historic Iftar at Kashmi

  In a record breaking feat, more than 5000 people will join Kashmir's largest iftar. This will be second time when a record will be created in Jammu and Kashmir. Last year, Kashmir created history by hosting Asia's longest iftar on the banks of world famous Dal lake. Asia's longest iftar table measuring 1.03 kilometres was laid near Al Noor Mosque in Sharjah in 2013 but that record was broken when a spread of over 1.6 kilometres was held at the iftar and the dining spread surpassed the previous record.   The organizers say that there is no specific guest list. And that anybody can walk in and join the iftar. Everything will be served free here. The organizers are expecting guests over 5000 and will be serving meals to them accordingly. They add that it is a non-profit event and local sponsors have pitched in with their help. While some have donated cash, some have donated potable water, some have given juices.

Air force to induct India made 'Tejas' today

  The Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, which has taken over three decades in the making will finally get inducted into the Air Force. The induction of two aircraft into the force will take place in Bengaluru on Friday.The aircraft are likely to perform a sortie during the induction ceremony. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will hand over the first two Tejas aircraft to the Air Force which will make up the 'Flying Daggers' 45, the name of the first squadron of the LCA.   As promised by the Hindustan Aeronautics, four more will be joining the fleet this year and eight the next year and it will be a total of 20 fighters to a squadron. The squadron will be based in Bengaluru for the first two years before being moved to Sulur in Tamil Nadu. Though the Tejas has a foreign engine, Israeli radar and weapons and British ejection seat it also incorporates considerable Indian technologies like the fly-by-wire system which gives computer-controlled inputs to charter the flight of the aircraft.

BCCI clears VVS Laxman- Kumble controversy

  There were reports of conflict of interest surrounding VVS Laxman who is one of the members who selected Kumble for the post. It was being reported that VVS Laxman, who was one of the three Cricket Advisory Committee members, is the second biggest shareholder in Kumble’s company Tenvic Sports Education Private Ltd. As a shareholder he holds, 33,332 shares in Tenvic Sports. Laxman was also entitled to a substantial amount of money in the form of incentives, bonus and other benefits from Kumble’s firm.   But yesterday, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) issued a statement saying Laxman had left Kumble’s firm ahead of joining the selection team. In a written statement, BCCI said, “Mr. Laxman informed BCCI that he had sold his total shareholding of 5 per cent in Tenvic Sport (sic) in the month of March 2016 and also declared that he no longer held any shareholding or any official or unofficial position in Tenvic Sports. This took place prior to the commencement of the operations of this Committee”. The statement added, “Mr. Laxman was in no position of a conflict of interest at the time of selection of the head coach of Indian cricket team”.

Modi's 7hrs assessment of his Ministers' work

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet his council of ministers to review and assess their performance till now. The Ministers in charge of various portfolios are expected to make presentations on work done in their departments in the last two years. The Prime Minister will be conducting this detailed performance assessment ahead of a likely cabinet reshuffle that could see changes in key ministries.According to reports the finance ministry has asked the ministries to prepare a slide show about the money allotted to them and spent and this will be presented to the Prime Minister, who will asses each ministry separately along with his set of officers.  It is being speculated that the Law Minister Sadananda Gowda, whose performance has reportedly been seen as disappointing, may get a strong minister of state and the Ministers of State Piyush Goyal and Dharmendra Pradhan may be promoted to cabinet rank as Goyal's shift to a more high profile ministry has been speculated upon for months. Uttar Pradesh, which goes to polls early next year, is likely to get more representation in the Union cabinet.

Indian Money in Swiss banks down by 33%

The Indian money in Swiss banks has hit an all time low record. It has dipped by more than 33%. Money held by Indians in Swiss banks has fallenby nearly one-third to a record low about Rs 8,392 crore amid a continuing global crackdown on the black money which is being stored in the Swiss accounts owing to its secrecy clauses. As per the latest data released on Thursday by the country's central banking authority SNB, Swiss National Bank, the money held by Indians with banks in Switzerland fell by CHF 596.42 million to CHF 1,217.6 million at the end of 2015. This is the lowest amount of money held by Indians in the Swiss banks. Towards the end of the year 2006 the funds held by Indians with Swiss banks stood at a record high of Rs 23,000 crore.
