With a number of names doing the rounds to get one of the most coveted jobs in the country, it seems like the chief of NIIT Aayog could soon clinch the role of the next Reserve Bank of India Governor. The 64-year- old Panagariya heads the government's main economic advisory body NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India). He is also India's key negotiator at G20 summit and has been Professor of Indian Political Economy at Columbia University. Beyond his impressive academic credentials, Panagariya also has the advantage of being an insider in the government for over one-and-a-half years. But the only catch here could be that as NITI Aayog chief, Panagariya holds a Cabinet minister rank. But, the RBI governor has cabinet secretary rank. So, if Panagariya is appointed as RBI governor, he will be, in fact, taking a huge demotion. The other primary contenders for the position are the former RBI deputy governors Subir Gokarn and Rakesh Mohan. Gokarn is, an Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund, a position also previously held by Mohan. It is being said that the name of the person to head RBI will be made public in a week's time.
