Babri Masjid Anniversary : Red alert in Hyderabad

Police in Hyderabad have sounded a high alert ahead of December 6, the anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid which is coinciding this year with 'Yaum-e-Ashoora', the 10th day of 'Muharram'. Security has been stepped up across the Andhra Pradesh capital, especially in the communally sensitive Old City. Police have deployed additional forces to maintain peace in view of calls by various Muslim organisations to observe the day as 'black day' and also for the smooth conduct of the annual 'Moharram procession'.   Police are taking no chances in view of the recent communal attacks in the city. According to police, at least six activists of Hindu Vahini were arrested last month for attacks on members of a minority community.Hyderabad Police commissioner AK Khan said known communal offenders were taken into custody as part of measures to avert any untoward incident.Police also launched vehicle checking operations in various parts of the city from Sunday evening. Additional Director General of Police SA Huda said additional paramilitary forces were also deployed to maintain law and order.Every year, the police make elaborate arrangements for the historic 'Moharram' procession but as the day is coinciding with the Babri Masjid demolition anniversary, police were making additional security arrangements. Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), a political party in the Old City, has called for a shutdown Tuesday as a mark of protest over the 1992 demolition. It is also demanding that the mosque be rebuilt on its original site at Ayodhya.

CBI charge sheets Reddy in Obulapuram mining case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Saturday formally filed charges in illegal mining case involving Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) owned by former Karnataka minister G. Janardhana Reddy. The CBI filed its charge sheet in the special court dealing with CBI cases at Nampally criminal court complex here. The charge sheet names Janardhana Reddy, his brother-in-law and OMC managing director B.V. Srinivasa Reddy and former director of mines V.D. Rajagopal as the accused. They are all lodged in Chanchalguda Central Jail here. The name of arrested Indian Administrative Service (IAS) official Y. Srilakshmi, who was released on bail Friday, did not figure in the charge sheet. The CBI is yet to get permission from the central government to prosecute her. CBI sources said the names of Srilakshmi and other accused might be included in the supplementary charge sheet at a later date. The accused have been charged with criminal conspiracy, cheating, theft, criminal trespass, breach of trust by public servant and forgery. The OMC has been charged with illegally mining iron ore in areas other than those allotted to it in Obulapuram area of Anantapur district. The CBI officials brought the 100-page charge sheet and supporting documents running into thousands of pages to the court in 10 trunks. The charge sheet has been filed under sections 120-B, 420, 468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 13 (2) read with 13 (1) (d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

Jagan Camp MLAs in Dilemma Over TDP No-confidence Motion

The Jagan camp MLAs are in a dilemma whether to support Chandrababu Naidu's noconfidence motion against the Kiran Kumar Reddy government or not. Though their leader YS Jagan Mohan had instructed them to support the no-trust move, the MLAs feel that Naidu is not really intending to bring down the government. In a move to signal the seriousness of his intent to bring down the government, Jagan said in Guntur Wednesday night that his MLAs would support Naidu’s motion regardless of how serious the latter is. Jagan convened a meeting of the MLAs in Hyderabad at the residence of MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy and asked them to support the noconfidence move. But most of the J camp MLAs, sources said, have not given firm commitments that they would indeed abide by his fiat. Though YSRC leaders claim that not less than 22 MLAs are in their camp, observers say not more than eight of them will vote for the no-trust motion. According to sources, only nine MLAs Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose, Amarnath Reddy, Golla Babu Rao, Mekapati Chandrasekhara Reddy, G Srikanth, Gurunath Reddy, K Srivinasulu, B Sivaprasad and Balineni Srinivasa Reddy attended the meeting. When Jagan asked them to support Naidu’s no-trust move, some MLAs are said to have argued that since Naidu does not really intend to bring down the government, supporting the motion would only invite disqualification. But Jagan reportedly insisted that the motion be supported lest people think they have an understanding with Congress. However after the meet, Subhash Chandra Bose said all MLAs in the J camp would support the no-trust motion though they doubt Naidu’s sincerity about pulling down the government.

Srilakshmi Sent to Jail: Sabitha Gets Clean Chit

Senior IAS officer Y Srilakshmi, arrested in the illegal mining case involving Gali Janardhan Reddy-owned Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC), was sent to judicial custody till December 12 by a local court. The CBI, probing the case, has given clean chit to state Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy, who was Minister for Mines & Geology when the mining leases were issued to OMC. CBI argued in the court that it was the duty of Srilakshmi to see that everything was in order before issuing the leases. As a minister Sabita Indra Reddy has merely sanctioned the leases. Srilakshmi was detained by CBI on Monday; she is accused of favoring OMC in grant of mining leases in 2007. Her bail plea says that she was only involved in processing of the file which led to issuance of the Government Order granting the lease. The lease had been provisionally granted by the Andhra Pradesh government one year before she took charge as secretary, Industries and Commerce, it says. Srilakshmi, when produced before the Special CBI Court after completion of three-day CBI custody, requested the judge with folded hands that she be kept at CBI office (for the duration of judicial custody) rather than in the jail. But she was sent to the Chanchalguda jail till December 12. Her husband, Gopi Krishna, himself a senior IPS officer, was by her side during the court proceedings. The court also reserved the order on her bail plea till tomorrow, after hearing the arguments.

Shankar Rao Hints at 2 Ministers' Involvement in Land Allotments

State Handloom & Textiles Minister Dr. P Shankar Rao skipped the crucial cabinet meeting held at the Secretariat on Wednesday (30-11-11) keeping everyone guessing what could have been the reason. It was reported that the reason for minister's absence was that he was busy in a meeting discussing the problems of weavers with floor leaders of all parties at the Lakeview Guest House. As per the sources, Shankar Rao already gave hint to the reporters on Tuesday itself that he would be skipping the meeting on Wednesday. He is said to have told them "I left the last cabinet meeting midway as I was not inclined to sign on the resolution allocating about 35 acres of assigned land at Timmapur to an entrepreneur for setting up a cold storage." The cabinet ratified the allotment of 35 acres of land to a private person at Thimmapur village, about 20 to 25 km away from city, at a meagre price of 6 lakh per acre. "I wrote a letter to chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy opposing the land allotment but there is no response from the government", he said. Without mentioning the names, Shankar Rao alleged that a minister from Nellore and another from Mahaboobnagar district played a key role in the allotment of the land. He said he would not sign if such land allocation proposals came at the cabinet meeting on 30 November. Moreover, his priority was conducting a meeting of floor leaders of all parties on weavers' issues on the day rather than attend the cabinet meeting, he is said to have told the reporters.

Babu Absolves Himself From Vijayamma's Allegations

In a bid to absolve himself from the allegations levelled against him by YSR Congress Hon. President YS Vijayamma, TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu has also started his own investigation into the allegations. Naidu made efforts to gather information regarding the hotel in Singapore, which Vijayamma alleged it belonged to Babu. Naidu wants to prove that the hotel doesn't belong to him. Accordingly, Chandrababu wrote a letter to the Singapore High Commissioner seeking details about the hotel mentioned by Vijayamma. The Singapore High Commissioner informed Naidu that the hotel belonged to someone from British Virginia Island (BVI). Vijayamma also alleged that Satyam Ramalinga Raju has funded his son Lokesh's education in the Stanford University. Naidu said "This allegation is also wrong. The US universities are not in such a situation to sell seats for money." He pointed out that his son worked in the World Bank, GE and also in the Singapore Prime Minister's office before joining the family business. Reiterating that Vijayamma's petition was baseless, Naidu said his party leaders filed a petition in the high court against Jagan with all documentary evidence. Making counter-allegations that the Congress was behind Vijayamma filing the petition against him, Babu said, "The truth will come out very soon. I can only tell my opponents that I did no mistake in public life," Naidu averred. "My life is like an open book", he added. Now it is for the CBI to trace the real owners of the alleged hotel in Singapore and see that whether the persons from British Virginia Island (BVI) had any links with Naidu.
