Eating healthy, appreciating life, understanding true happiness and living well is a bigger issue than your waistline or looks - poor habits can also take a toll on your careers, claim few studies.

When we eat well, take in proper nutrients and stay active, we are making the choice not only to ensure our long-term health, but also to impact our long-term success in the workplace. Simple changes can impact productivity at your workplace.

1. Whether it is a small choice between a fruit like banana and a bag of chips, or a larger lifestyle shift such as wiping out processed foods from your diet, it is important to start living a healthy lifestyle today.

2. There are seven differently coloured fruit and vegetable families. Each family contains different antioxidants, which is why it’s important to include a variety of colours. Aim for at least one portion each of red, purple, dark green, light green, yellow, orange and white fruit and vegetables every two days.

3. One handful of nuts a day is all it takes to slash your risk of heart disease and potentially add three years to your life, say American researchers. Nuts are packed with heart-healthy fats, plus loads of selenium - vital for all – round good health ,say nutritionists. Avoid buying chips, junk food and sodas during work hours and stuffing yourself with too many teas or coffees.

4. Never allow yourself to get past 11 on the hunger scale (which goes from 1 to 20) before eating. If you get too hungry, you’ll end up bingeing on fatty ,sugary foods for instant energy. Eating at regular intervals with not more than 3 hours gap may help boosting your metabolism.

5. Five portions of fruit and vegetables is the minimum you need each day for good health. Fruit and vegetables are packed with substances called antioxidants, which reduce the risk of serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. Antioxidants also help fight common infections. Try for three servings of vegetables and two of fruit, as vegetables have more fibre and less sugar.

6. Water helps your body with physical and mental performance, detoxification and digestion. Keep a water bottle at your desk and you’ll find it much easier to drink the recommended water each day as per your body and lifestyle needs. It will ease stress and result in sustained energy throughout the day. You can also supplement it with fresh lemonade and coconut water, etc, to avoid monotony.

7. Give yourself several reasons to take a break and move around after every 40 minutes at your workplace. Simply getting up and moving around for a few moments can keep you focused, less fatigued and feeling better.

8. Get down from your vehicle a few blocks before your office and walk the remaining distance use staircase more frequently than the lift to lead a more active lifestyle.

9. People who work at desks often face stress, back and joint pains and weight gain problems at work. To get rid of such health problems, while sitting in your chair, flex your feet and circle your ankles, stretch your legs and arms as frequent as you can.

10. Thinking positively is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage and impact our behavior and actions. Also sufficient sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.
