It’s an open secret that some doctors take gifts from the Medical representatives for helping in their business. Doctors who accept such freebies often get partial towards those Pharmaceutical firms. They not only advice their patients to take the medicines of those companies, but may also prescribe medicines when they are not necessary. Such practices may either bankrupt the patients or spoil their health. Keeping in view of such practices, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has issued strict regulations to curb the offerings. Hereby, any doctor who accepts a gift from the pharma companies will not be allowed to practice for some time period. This time period is based on the value of the gift he has received. For example if a doctor accepts a gift of 5,000/- his name shall be removed from the medical register for three months and if he accept a gift of 50,000/- he will not be allowed to practice for a year. According to the latest norms, if a doctor endorses a particular brand… he has to prove the legitimacy of his decision. The norms seem to be good, but will the MCI follow it strictly?
