86 Private Buses Seized as Crackdown Continues

Intensifying their crackdown on private bus operators across Andhra Pradesh, the authorities Wednesday seized 83 buses plying in violation of rules. The Road Transport Authority (RTA) conducted raids in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, Visakhapatnam, Eluru, Adilabad and other towns. The seized buses include 43 private travel buses and 40 school buses.   The authorities also booked cases against operators which have not paid tax and those who were not maintaining a record of the passengers. Taking serious view of the spurt in bus accidents, RTA officials launched a drive against the private operators three days ago. Special teams of RTA employees checked the buses of private schools and colleges on the outskirts of Hyderabad. RTA officials said buses which were plying without permits, fitness certificate and other documents and carrying passengers and luggage in excess to permissible limits were seized. The Private Travels Association condemned the RTA action against the operators, saying they were rendering service to people as state-run Road Transport Corp (RTC) was unable to meet the demand. The government started the crackdown after a private bus carrying Shirdi pilgrims from Hyderabad met with an accident Saturday in Maharashtra, killing 30 people. There was utter confusion after the accident as police found that the private operator, Sri Kaleswari Tours and Travels, had no data of the number of passengers. The RTA Tuesday seized 36 buses including 18 belonging to Sri Kaleswari Tours and Travels.

I Will Reveal Their Names Soon: Tara Chowdary

Tara Choudary, who faces allegations of running a brothel and was recently released from jail after 60 days in judicial custody, claimed that she had videos and recordings of an MP and several police officials who came to her house.     She told reporters that there was a threat to her life as she was sitting on a mine of information that could expose an MP and police officials. “If I’m given protection, I will reveal those names,” she said. Claiming to have been victimised by the police, she said she was in Bengaluru and Tirupati on the dates that she allegedly detained the girl here who lodged a complaint against her. It was a conspiracy by the police to extort money out of her, she said. “In 2008, an MP, an MLA, an SP and a DSP were caught on my cellphone camera when they misbehaved with girls. I recorded their vulgar behaviour for my safety. There are SMSes sent by them to my mobile,” she said. “I am ready for a narco analysis test and the same should be conducted against the cops as well,” Tara said. “I am a victim, not an accused,” the actor clarified. “Some politicians, in-cluding an MP, have denied links with me. If there are no links, why are the calls made from the MP’s guest house and his residence? He spoke from his brother’s cellphone too.” Tara demanded that the CID probe the entire episode. Meanwhile, the Banjara Hills police rejected as 'baseless' allegations against them that they had stripped Tara and taken photographs of her, which they were threatening to circulate on the internet if she revealed the names of the politicians and police officials.

EURO CUP 2012: Germany Cruise Into Quarter Finals

Germany advanced to the quarterfinals of Euro 2012 on Sunday as defender Lars Bender scored his first international goal to seal their 2-1 win over Denmark which put the Danes out.   After Portugal's 2-1 win over Holland in Kharkiv, another three points at Arena Lviv confirmed Germany as Group B winners with three victories while Portugal progress as runners-up from the so-called "Group of Death". "The match was just as tough as we thought it would be," admitted Germany coach Joachim Loew. "We lacked the killer instinct in the first-half, which would have made it easier, and then Denmark scored. "We knew we could have gone out if we had gone behind, so nerves crept in. "We showed maturity in the second-half, but we can still improve." The Germans will now play Friday's quarterfinal against Group A runners-up Greece in Gdansk, their Euro 2012 base, while Portugal will play the Group A winners the Czech Republic in Warsaw on Thursday. "We have to be disappointed, but I am not disappointed with the team," said Denmark coach Morten Olsen. "It was a fantastic performance and we have played against one of the world's elite, but unfortunately we paid the price for our carelessness." Lukas Podolski, who was making his 100th appearance for Germany, celebrated his century with the opening goal on 19 minutes which was cancelled out by a Michael Krohn-Dehli just five minutes later before Bender's late winner. "Independent of the goal, that was my first start (for Germany), so it was something special," beamed Bender. "We were trying to get that second goal, I just saw the goal in front of me and it was a bit lucky. "I am not used to being in that position, but it felt good to be there." Having made his debut in the 2-2 friendly draw with Poland last September, the 23-year-old Bender was making only his ninth appearance for Germany, while twin brother Sven, who plays for Borussia Dortmund, was cut from the squad. Both coaches made only essential changes to their start line-ups. Loew opted for Bayer Leverkusen's Bender at right-back for Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng, who was suspended after picking up a yellow card in their 2-1 win over Holland last Wednesday. Likewise, Olsen brought Jakob Poulsen into the midfield for veteran forward Dennis Rommedahl, who damaged his hamstring in their 3-2 defeat to Portugal. The Germans started at pace and got the break through when Mueller fired his pass across the Denmark goal and Mario Gomez let the ball roll for man-of-the-match Podolski to drill his shot home on for his 44th international goal. The Germans held the lead for only five minutes before Nicklas Bendtner headed back from a corner and Krohn-Dehli, who also scored in the Danes' shock 1-0 win over Holland, got his head to the ball before the German defence. It was 1-1 at the break, but midfielder Jakub Poulson, in for hamstring injury-victim Rommedahl, clipped the post with his shot on 51 minutes. The game's tempo dropped in the second-half with Germany's midfield star Mesut Ozil looking flat as the Danish defenders constantly thwarted the Germans. Podolski was brought off with 25 minutes left as Leverkusen's Andre Schuerrle was given his chance and he soon tested Andersen with a shot. With ten minutes to go, Germany counter-attacked at pace. Ozil squared for the grateful Bender and the right-back calmly slotted past Andersen to seal victory.
