Scientists Claim They Found Evidence of God Particle

The head of the world's biggest atom smasher says they have discovered a new particle that is consistent with the long-sought Higgs boson known popularly as the 'God particle', which is believed to give all matter in the universe size and shape. To cheers and standing ovations from scientists, the world's biggest atom smasher claimed the discovery of a new subatomic particle Wednesday, calling it "consistent" with the long-sought Higgs boson - popularly known as the "God particle" - that helps explain what gives all matter in the universe size and shape. "We have now found the missing cornerstone of particle physics," Rolf Heuer, director of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), told scientists. He said the newly discovered subatomic particle is a boson, but he stopped just shy of claiming outright that it is the Higgs boson itself -- an extremely fine distinction. "As a layman, I think we did it," he told the elated crowd. "We have a discovery. We have observed a new particle that is consistent with a Higgs boson." The Higgs boson, which until now has been a theoretical particle, is seen as the key to understanding why matter has mass, which combines with gravity to give an object weight. The idea is much like gravity and Isaac Newton's discovery of it: Gravity was there all the time before Newton explained it. But now scientists have seen something very much like the Higgs boson and can put that knowledge to further use. CERN's atom smasher, the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border, has been creating high-energy collisions of protons to investigate dark matter, antimatter and the creation of the universe, which many theorize occurred in a massive explosion known as the Big Bang. Two independent teams at CERN said Wednesday they have both "observed" a new subatomic particle - a boson. Heuer called it "most probably a Higgs boson, but we have to find out what kind of Higgs boson it is." Asked whether the find is a discovery, Heuer answered, "As a layman, I think we have it. But as a scientist, I have to say, "What do we have?" "It is consistent with a Higgs boson as is needed for the standard model," Heuer said. "We can only call it a Higgs boson - not the Higgs boson." The leaders of the two CERN teams - Joe Incandela, head of CMS with 2,100 scientists, and Fabiola Gianotti, head of ATLAS with 3,000 scientists - each presented in complicated scientific terms what was essentially extremely strong evidence of a new particle. Incandela said it was too soon to say definitively whether it is the "standard model" Higgs that Scottish physicist Peter Higgs and others predicted in the 1960s - part of a standard model theory of physics involving an energy field where particles interact with a key particle, the Higgs boson. Asked his opinion, Higgs, who was invited to be in the audience, said he also could not yet say. But he told the audience that the discovery of something that appears to be so close to what he predicted. "It is an incredible thing that it has happened in my lifetime," he said, calling it a huge achievement for the proton-smashing collider built in a 27-kilometer (17-mile) underground tunnel. The stunning work elicited standing ovations and frequent applause at a packed auditorium in CERN as Gianotti and Incandela each took their turn. Incandela called it "a Higgs-like particle" and said "we know it must be a boson and it's the heaviest boson ever found." "Thanks, nature!" Gianotti said to laughs, giving thanks for the discovery. Later, she told reporters that "the standard model is not complete" but that "the dream is to find an ultimate theory that explains everything - we are far from that." The phrase "God particle" was coined by Nobel - Prize winning physicist Leon Lederman but is used by laymen, not physicists, as an easier way of explaining how the subatomic universe works and got started. Incandela said the last undiscovered piece of the standard model could be a variant of the Higgs that was predicted or something else that entirely changes the way scientists think about how matter is formed. "This boson is a very profound thing we have found. We're reaching into the fabric of the universe in a way we never have done before. We've kind of completed one particle's story," he said. "Now, we're way out on the edge of exploration." Source: Los Angeles Times.

VANPIC Project: RAK Legal Counsel Writes to AP CM

Vadarevu and Nizampatnam Port & Industrial Corridor (VANPIC) project implementation is getting delayed for various reasons for the past couple of years. The general legal counsel of the emirate of Ras al Khaimah (RAK) has expressed serious concerns over the delays in the implementation of the Rs 16,800-crore ($3.02b) seaport project in Andhra Pradesh and urged the government to resolve the issues immediately. The RAK's general counsel wrote a letter to chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy to this effect. The seaport project VANPIC, is jointly being executed by RAK and businessman Nimmagadda Prasad, who was arrested by the CBI on May 15 in connection with a corruption investigation. The emirate of RAK had, in March 2008, partnered Nimmagadda Prasad's Matrix Enport to set up two seaports, an airport and a port-based industrial corridor, promising to create direct employment to 64,000 people and economy-wide employment opportunities to over 4 lakh people. The RAK general legal counsel, in a letter to the Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy last Monday, has also pointed out that their recent attempts to seek appointments to meet him weren't successful due to the Legislative Assembly sessions and byelections in the state. This is the third time in the last year that RAK government representatives have aired concerns over their investments, Rs 845 crore so far, in the Andhra seaport project. The RAK emirate's ruler wrote to the Indian prime minister in August last year and the RAK CEO appealed to the Andhra Pradesh chief minister in April this year to save the project that has got mired in various snags. Shooting off a letter to AP government by RAK general counsel at this juncture assumes significance in the backdrop of the speculation that the AP government is considering cancelling the approvals granted to the seaport project and also because the concerns are now being expressed by the RAK's general legal counsel. The letter as well can be considered as an indication on the ground preparations by the RAK government to take it up legally at the highest levels to protect their investment interests.

Police Report on Security Measures to Chandrabala

In response to the petition filed by social activist Vasireddy Chandrabala, whose name sprang up in the controversial CBI JD VV Laxminarayana's call list case, the police have submitted their report to SHRC on security measures taken up by them. The Cyberabad and Hyderabad police submitted a report on Monday to the State Human Rights Commission. Ms. Chandrabala in her petition had accused YSR Congress of defaming her. In response, the police reported that she had been provided with adequate security. Ms. Chandrabala's mobile number had appeared frequently in the leaked call list of CBI JD V V Lakshminarayana, which was highlighted in the media following which she had moved the SHRC. As ordered by the commission, the report was submitted by the police commissioner of Hyderabad in which he said that the separate cases filed by Chandrabala and CBI joint director Lakshminarayana were still under investigation and both the cases had been transferred to the Central Crime Station (CCS), Hyderabad on June 29. Based on the preliminary enquiries, it was also mentioned in the report that Chandrabala knew Lakshmirayana since he was a classmate and a family friend. Since Chandrabala had sought protection in her petition to the commission, the Cyberabad police also submitted a report on the measures they had taken in this regard since her residence falls under their limits. According to the report, the Cyberabad police had posted a police constable and home guard at the house of the petitioner from June 22 till June 30, providing her round-the-clock protection. In the report, it was also mentioned that based on Chandrabala's request, the security was withdrawn after June 30 and she was provided with the contact phone numbers of the police officers concerned so as to seek help in case of any eventuality. The SHRC has further ordered the city police commissioner to submit a follow up report by August 6 on the progress of the case.
