 Sangameswarar Temple!

Among the many temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Sangameswarar Temple holds a special place. Located in Erode district of Tamil Nadu, this temple is close to the confluence of three rivers - river Kaveri, river Bhavani and agaya gangai or the invisible source of water. The Sangameswarar Temple finds a mention in the Tamil literature Thirupugazh, Pillaithamizh by Thirugnanasambandar and Arunagiriyar, as Thirunana. This holy shrine is popular as Dakshina Triveni Sangamam and the locals call it Kooduthurai.

Let us now discover the story behind the Sangameswarar Temple.Like most other temples of Lord Shiva in India, the Sangameswarar Temple is also the home of many miracles. It is said that when Kubera, the Lord of wealth was given an aircraft, to visit all the Shiva temples in the world, he started off on an unpredictable journey. When he was going, he noticed an unusual site under the Ilandhai tree. He saw that a deer, tiger, cow, elephant, snake and rat were drinking water without any enmity.Surprised by this, he decided to inquire about this further. Just as this thought crossed Kubera’s mind, a voice from the sky told him that, it was a place where vedas visited, inhabited by gandharvas and advised him to worship the shivalingam under the iilanadhi tree. It may be interesting to know that the Iilanadhi tree gives fruits throughout the year, which are offered to the presiding deity of the temple.

The cow behind the statue of Lord Vishnu is a symbol of harmony between Vaishnavaites and Shaivaites. There is another story related to the Sangameswarar Temple. British collector, William Karo posted at Coimbatore, was staying at a banglow. One night, when he was fast asleep, a little girl came and woke him up and took him outside. As soon as they came out, the banglow collapsed. Surprised by his luck, the officer turned to thank the girl but she had vanished. Next morning he learnt from the priest that it was none other than Bhavani Vedanaayaki Amman. How blessed was the collector.

So,what are you waiting for? Pack your bags and go to the Sangameswarar Temple. If the Lord is pleased, you could witness a miracle too!
