Winter Care     During winter season our skin becomes dry due to cold waves. The Best way to nourish your skin is - oil massage. There are quite a number of oils for massaging, some of them can be found in our kitchen itself! Coconut oil is one of the commonest oil, which would be definitely available at our homes. Usage of coconut oil is a wonderful and natural way to make your hair and skin soft, radiant, and healthy. As Coconut oil is natural, it is free of chemicals and side effects. Ditch your deep conditioners, under-eye creams, and lotions and replace them with coconut oil. Grab a bottle of unrefined coconut oil, which will do wonders for your skin and hair.  Olive oil is rich in vitamins, minerals and natural fatty acids. Now a days Olive is being used in anti-aging skin care products as it is rich in antioxidants, prevents skin aging, delays the onset of wrinkles and fine lines; nourishes and rejuvenates the skin. There are different varieties of olive oil available in the market. Extra virgin olive oil is the best! Almond oil is rich in Vitamin A, B and E, which are great for skin health. In fact, most skin care products have these vitamins loaded in them. The oil helps in maintaining moisture levels of the skin and gets absorbed instantaneously without clogging the pores. Take any one variety of oil and apply it over your skin and massage it gently before going to bath. Even after bath, you will see your skin will not become dry. You can check your skin by a nail scratch, if white scratch appears your skin is still dry. So, take time to pamper your skin with oil massage and to maintain it ever-radiant!   - Sandya Koya

Trends for the Winter Festive Season!   With Chirstmas and New year arriving, it is once again party season, even in the non-western countries too. Festive gatherings, get togethers, office parties and such give the fashionistas ample oppurtunities to sport the latest trends of winter fashion. If you are also one who is looking to change your looks, then read ahead. Hair for the Holidays: we are talking about showing off a new hair color here. Try lowlights first, to test, then decide if you would keep your rest of the tresses dark or color fully. Shades gaining steam this season are the sultry ones, soft auburns, icy blondes. Fo the ladies who are color-shy, try switching up your hair cut to a fishtail or side bang braid. For s party, try a messy bouffant or a sleek, high ponytail which add class. Fresh face in Winter: just because its a dull winter, you need not use bright colors to make the surroundings look brighter. Though Red Lips are in this season too, balance the other areas of the face. If your eyes are in smoky metallic shades, leave the lips with just a nude gloss. If you choose a bright red or pink for the lips, let the eyes carry only mascara and a soft, earth-toned eyeliner. Whatever you play with the eyes and lips, just add a wind-kissed look to your cheeks, with blush in soft, rosy or bronzes hues. Dress codes: Westerly festive season it is....the layered Tees and Leather Jackets, Midi-skirts, cozy cashmere sweaters, a white dress, one black dress, silks and strappy stilettos add style and sophistication. Add details: After the face and the dress, nows the turn to choose the details....try metallic nail lacquers in silver, gold or bronzes for parties, the creamy, opaque, earth and slate colors are perfect for everyday wear. Turn to jewellery now. Try the burgundy and lilac colors that pair perfectly with black dresses, for that office party. Carry everything with confidence....you are the best!!   - Prathyusha Talluri

Winter Health!   Winter weather in any region is brutal to the local people, be it the coldest countries or the hottest continents. Winter weather can leave hair, skin and nails dry and lackluster. How to keep these body parts healthy during winters may not be an open question but everytime one finds leisure moments, one may ask themselves, seeking for advice. Once Again, kitchen cabinet is the solution.Virgin Coconut oil can be used as a long-lasting body moisturiser, free of chemicals, not so expensive, and as a multi-purpose item. It will leave the body feeling greasy first, but very quickly gets absorbed, there would not be any traces of the oil applied.  It also works well to cope with eczema, dry patches and acne. I prefer WholeFoods' 365 brand of Organic Virgin Coconut oil or even Trader Joes' brand, available in the USA. For dry hair solutions, we Indians know the uses of coconut oil, however, the virgin version is considered better and efficient, compared to those sold in the stores, specially for hair care, they are over-filtered and may tend to lack the best qualities of the oil, leaving only the oily part of it. For dry nails treatment, regularly massage virgin coconut oil into your hands and feet, with special attention on the cuticles and nail beds. Along with using coconut oil for treating these dry body areas, drinking plenty of water and eating enough protein is key to improving hair, nail and skin health. Omega-3 and Anti-oxidant rich foods, Green tea help with hydration and green tea has polyphenols packed with healing abilities. Dairy products like yoghurt contain vitamin A and calcium which keep the nails healthy and strong, foods with vitamin B, Biotin and other minerals can be extremely beneficial in improving hair, nail and skin health during the harsh winter season, anywhere in the world!   - Prathyusha Talluri

Homemade Basic Shampoo     We are learning about making homemade beauty products. Today its the shampoo's turn, a non-artificial dye, non-perfumed simple HARMLESS shampoo. This is a great shampoo for all hair types because it is gentle on hair and won't strip away the natural oils. For 8 oz. basic shampoo: 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup mild natural liquid soap ( like Dr. Bronner's or any Castile soap) 1/2 tsp light vegetable oil ( optional) If hair is oily, the optional vegetable oil may be omitted. But if hair is dry or damaged, include it for extra softness and conditioning. Gently stir all the ingredients together, carefully not to create any foam. Pour the mixture into a clean BPA free plastic container. When using, shampoo as normal, and then rinse well with cool water. Note: 1) It maynot create as much lather as the commercial shampoos do, but it washes the hair well and does no damage. 2) Because we haven't used any tearfree formula, the resulting shampoo is also a non-tearfree shampoo, hence not recommended for young children. Otherwise, if there is a tearfree Castile liquid soap available atall( which i am not aware of), please consider using it.   - Prathyusha Talluri
