PCC Chief Denies Nexus With TDP

Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president D. Srinivas has refuted allegations of a nexus  between the ruling Congress and the Telugu Desam Party in the forth coming bye-elections to Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula Assembly seats. Mr. Srinivas was critical of YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy for his reported claims that the forthcoming bypoll was a fight between AICC president Sonia Gandhi and late Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. "The statement exposes the bankruptcy of Mr. Jagan and the new party is trying to bank on YSR who was die-hard Congressman till his last breath," he said. Speaking to reporters here on Monday, the APCC president said entry of new political parties into the political arena was welcome. But the parties should approach the people with their ideologies instead of “misleading” them with their claims. YSR was a committed Congress leader who fulfilled all the promises made in the manifesto of 2004 elections and worked tirelessly for strengthening Ms. Gandhi's leadership. The bypoll is set to witness a triangular contest as three contenders, the Congress, the TDP and the YSR Congress Party, are in the fray. The Congress had no “tacit understanding” with the TDP which continues to be its main rival. Replying to queries on charges of corruption levelled by a section of Congress leaders against the late Chief Minister, he said the party recognised the services of YSR and the views expressed by a section of leaders was their individual opinion. He said the names of the party candidates for the two seats would be finalised shortly.

Why Mysoora is Reluctant to Fight Jagan in Kadapa?

Rajya Sabha member from Telugu Desam Party Dr. M V Mysoora Reddy is reluctant to fight Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy in the ensuing Kadapa Lok Sabha bypoll. He said that he is not keen to contest in the by-polls for the Kadapa Lok Sabha segment from where the former MP, Mr Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, is testing his fortunes. He told this to media persons after an all party meet with the chief election officer. Leaders of both the parties Congress and Telugu Desam, Kiran Kumar Reddy and Chandrababu Naidu openly told the CEO that no one could withstand the money power of the MLC candidates backed by Mr Jagan in the recent elections to the Legislative Council. The CEO assured the leaders that EC would take all necessary steps to ensure free and fair bypolls in the State. Apart from money power and popularity of Jagan Mohan Reddy, it would still be very difficult for Mysoora Reddy to make up his mind in contesting from Kadapa. In the faction ridden politics of Rayalaseema, particularly in Kadapa district, leaders cannot take decisions on major moves without consulting their followers. Violent history prevents them from doing so and Dr. Mysoora Reddy is no exception to it. Meanwhile, Jagan Mohan Reddy left for Kadapa district on Friday evening for a 40 day stay for the duration of bypolls. Before leaving for Kadapa, Mr Jagan held a confidential meeting with some of his supporters to finalise a symbol out of the 53 free symbols updated by the EC recently. Mr Jagan is the national president of "Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress party," popularly known as YSR party. As per the SC directions, the EC has allotted 'Ceiling Fan' symbol to YSR Congress in the Kadapa bypolls. It's likely that the former MP, Y SJagan Mohan Reddy, and his mother smt. Y S Vijayalakshmi, will contest on the 'Ceiling Fan' symbol in the coming Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula Assembly bypolls.

The complaints were mostly in urban areas, that too in Hyderabad, and the figures didn't show any abnormal trend."

EAMCET Postponed to 22 May

EAMCET-2011 examination date has been postponed from 8 May to 22 May to  accommodate bypolls to be held for one Assembly and one Lok Sabha seat in Kadapa District. The postponement will affect around 3.5 lakh students in the State. The postponement of this crucial exam will force students to alter their study schedules. Several students from AP will be preparing for other prominent competitive exams too and this will affect their preparation plans. The Election Commission announced the polling date on Wednesday and though APSCHE could have requested the EC to change the date to avoid a clash with the exams, it took a unilateral decision on Thursday to postpone the exam by two weeks. The chief electoral officer Mr Bhanwar Lal had even assured Eamcet officials on Thursday that he would take up the issue of changing the date with the Election Commission of India, and sought a day’s time for the purpose. However, the Eamcet committee held an emergency meeting at the APSCHE office on Thursday evening and decided to postpone the examination. However, the chairman of APSCHE, Prof. Jayaprakash Rao, claimed at a press meet that the decision to postpone the exam was made after the Election Commission refused to change the polling date. He explained that as per the orders of the AP State Human Rights Commission, to avoid students getting caught up in traffic jams and reaching late for the exam, Eamcet is held only on Sundays. Therefore, EAMCET-2011 has been postponed to Sunday 22 May.

Telugu Desam MLA Nani Strikes a Discordant note

Differences between the two Telugu Desam MLAs Kodali Venkateswara Rao alias Nani of Gudivada and district unit president and Mylavaram MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao were exposed on Thursday. Mr Nani came down heavily on the TD district unit president criticising that the district leader is taking unilateral decisions and not giving due importance to other leaders in the district. Talking to reporters at Gudivada on Thursday, Mr Nani vent his ire against Mr Umamaheswara Rao alleging that the Nandigama MLA was not giving respect to even the NTR family. The dispute broke out during the visit of Rajya Sabha member Nandamuri Harikrishna to Challapalli on Tuesday to inaugurate a railway reservation counter. A local ZPTC member and TD leader Balaram aspired that Mr Harikrishna set the foundation for the construction of a shopping complex which was named NTR Complex in the same village. Mr Balaram asked Mr Umamaheswara Rao to invite Mr Harikrishna to the local foundation programme. He told the local villagers that Mr Harikrishna would attend the programme. To the surprise of Mr Balaram, Mr Harikrishna left the village after the inauguration of the railway reservation counter and did not attend to the foundation programme. Upset with the incident, Mr Balaram tendered his resignation. Quoting the incident, Mr Nani criticised Mr Umamaheswara Rao for not informing Mr Harikrishna about Mr Balaram’s invitation. He alleged that the district TD president humiliated the TD MP. Mr Nani categorically said all the TD leaders must give due respect to the NTR family, otherwise their political survival would be very difficult. He said there was no coordination between the Telugu Desam leaders during the visit of Mr Harikrishna on March 29. He recalled that Mr Harikrishna sanctioned lakhs of rupees of MPlad funds for the developmental activities in Krishna district and the latter deserves respect from the district party leaders. He said he would lodge a complaint with the TD president Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu about the incident.

Vivekananda Reddy Choses Pulivendula Constituency

After much dilly-dallying, Agriculture Minister Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy has finally decided to contest the byelections from Pulivendula Assembly constituency. According to sources, Mr. Vivekananda Reddy expressed his willingness to enter fray against his sister-in-law Y. S. Vijayamma from this segment. It is understood that he conveyed his decision to APCC president D. Srinivas at a meeting, the latter had convened with the Congress leaders from Kadapa district on Thursday. Byelections to Kadapa parliamentary constituency and Pulivendula segment are scheduled on May 8. Former MP Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy is the candidate from YSR Congress Party from Kadapa. Initially, Congress leaders were not keen on fielding a candidate against Ms. Vijayamma, widow of former Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy. However, they changed their opinion at a meeting with Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Thursday morning. At the meeting attended by Ministers D. L. Ravindra Reddy, Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy, and Md. Ahmedullah the party felt it should field candidates in the two constituencies. The party is likely to consider the names of Dr. Ravindra Reddy, N. Varadarajulu Reddy, N. Tulasi Reddy, and former MLA Ramesh Reddy and even invite former TDP leader Kandula Rajamohan Reddy for Kadapa parliamentary constituency. Sources said the Congress leaders pointed out that there was no need to give any concession as Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy had severed ties with the ruling party. Meanwhile, Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy, who cut short the ‘Odarpu Yatra' in Vizianagaram and returned to the city, was busy holding meetings with his supporters. The Jagan group sharpened its attack on the Congress with rebel Congress MLAs – C. Adinarayana Reddy, G. Srikanth Reddy, A. Amaranatha Reddy, and B. Gurunatha Reddy -- ridiculing the APCC chief's move to constitute a committee to probe Council poll debacle. They dared the leadership to initiate disciplinary action against them. The Congress leaders hit back at the rebels seeking disciplinary action against them. “I will not be part of the election campaign if the five rebel Congress MLAs are not suspended from the party,” Kamalapuram MLA G. Veerashiva Reddy said at a press conference.

Suggesting the students not to get deterred by failures, he said they need not compare themselves with others and instead grow and become ‘unique you.' Dr. Kalam stressed the necessity of focused work on convergence of technologies in bio-nano-info .Dr. Kalam also unveiled the logo of IIT designed by Dr. Uday Kumar, who also designed the symbol of the rupee. Jagan asked to rename Odarpu as Teertha Yatra

Describing the ongoing Odarpu Yatra taken up by ex-MP, Mr Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, after one-and-a-half years of the death of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy as irrelevant, the 20-point programme implementation committee chairman, Dr N. Tulasi Reddy, advised Mr Jagan to change the nomenclature of his tour to ‘Teertha Yatra.’ He suggested that Mr Jagan continue his tour programme to take up the problems of people instead. Reacting sharply to the criticism from the Jagan group that both the Congress and Telugu Desam were involved in match-fixing in the recently held MLC polls, the chairman said that there was cross-voting even from supporters of the Jagan group to the Congress and Telugu Desam. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, the chairman referred to the persistent demand from the Opposition for setting up a joint legislature committee to probe graft in allotment of lands during the late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy’s regime, and said that government was committed to expose graft and punish the guilty; he added that government was ready to constitute a JLC if there was need. Turning his attention to the implementation of the 20 point programme, the chairman said that the number of families in the BPL category which used to be around 60 per cent in the country in 1975, came down to nearly 26 per cent at present, and in case of the state, was only 16 per cent. He said that as part of implementation of the programme, more SCs had benefited and added that they were carrying out periodical reviews of implementation at the state and district levels. Meanwhile at Kakinada, the chairman described Mr Jagan as a “property successor” of Y.S Rajasekhar Reddy whereas the agriculture minister, Mr Y.S Vivekananda, was the true successor of the YSR political legacy. He also branded the YSR Congress as a fake political party and blamed its leader for daydreaming of grabbing power in the ensuing polls in 2014. He said that the Congress which had a chequered history of 126 years would emerge much stronger as was the case in the recently concluded MLC polls.

Next century belongs to Mobile Internet

The past decade of Internet usage saw users leaping from 400 million to two billion, but the next decade will belong to mobile users, said N. Chandrasekharan, CEO, Tata Consultancy Services. Moderating a panel discussion on 'Universal, Inclusive World Wide Web (WWW) - The Next Frontier', as part of the 20 {+t} {+h} International World Wide Web Conference here on Tuesday, he said that focus will be on bridging the gap between those using internet on desk and laptops and those accessing it on their mobiles. The number of Internet users on mobile phones was currently estimated at 5.3 billion, he said by way of illustration. The exponential growth, in the number of users, apart; leveraging mobile Internet access to its fullest potential would be the focus. Challenges that would have to be faced in taking the web to the next frontier included cost, access and the language barriers, apart from security and privacy issues being the major constraints that needed to be overcome. Mr. Chandrasekharan also mentioned how the social media was increasingly playing a dynamic role, recalling how, apparently casual, posts left on Twitter and Facebook were triggering events even on the government side and leading to controversies. Kris Gopalakrishnan, CEO & MD, Infosys said that lots of changes had taken place since the browser came into being in 1993. By 2020, about 50 to 60 billion devices and appliances would be connected through the web and they would drive a significant innovation, he said. He said that strides would be made in mobile banking too. He also said that transaction costs needed to be brought down, apart from putting an entirely different computers system in place. This was possible, he said, taking the example of how the reducing costs of mobile handsets and calling rates had led to increasing number of people using phones. Initiatives N. Ravishankar, Joint Secretary CEO, NIXI National Internet Exchange of India, outlined initiatives being taken by the Government of India and explained the different programmes and schemes being implemented in health, education and public service sectors. Deepak Phatak, an academician from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, said that a majority of students were still reading in their native languages. Innovation was required to deliver content right from the school-level, he said.
