Assam, Northeast's first BJP win

BJP registered a historic win in Assam today, making it the first state in Northeast to have them in power. The party, which fought the Assam Assembly Elections in alliance with the Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland Peoples Front, created history by winning the mandate to form its first government in the Northeastern state by decimating Congress. This signals the end of three-time, Congress chief minister Tarun Gogoi's political career. The 82-year-old was the chief minister of the state since 2001. Union minister and Chief Minister candidate Sarbananda Sonowal won from Majuli.
