Hearing petitions seeking a ban on circulation of jokes about the Sikh community, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court asked the Sikh bodies as to what can be done to imposea ban on the hugely popular Santa-Banta jokes. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) along with other bodies claiming to be representatives of Sikhs had earlier approached the apex court seeking a ban on jokes that project members of the community in poor light. The apex court has asked the Sikh bodies to come up with a mechanism, within the next six weeks, to ban 'sardar' jokes. ''We may say do not crack such jokes. But then how do we enforce the order? Of course we do not want you to be ridiculed, but please tell us in what way we can do something. You come out with suggestions within six weeks," a bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur has told the Sikh community representatives in the court. In February, during the hearing of a case pertaining to over 5,000 websites which feature jokes on Sikhs, the court had asked how to determine whether a particular joke is derogatory.
