Well! We might be watching Arnab Goswami screaming at the politicians every night, demanding an explanation on behalf of the nation. But the world doesn’t seem to be happy with the press freedom in India. In the 2016 ‘World Press Freedom Index’ released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), India is placed at 133 among 180 nations. The report claims that journalists and bloggers were being instantly attacked by the religious groups who feel offended by their writings. It feels that Modi seems to be indifferent to these threats and problems.
The report which is based on questionnaires filled out by experts across the world as well as on data of abuses and violence committed against reporters, has placed Finland in the top for sixth consecutive year. Finland was closely followed by Netherlands and Norway. Its interesting to note that the neighbours of India too haven’t done well in the list. While Pakistan was ranked 147, Sri Lanka was surprisingly placed at 141. And here are a few more interesting ranks from the list... America (44), Bangladesh (144), Russia (148), China (176).
