The CBI is today examining former Air Force Chief S.P.Tyagi in relation to the Agusta Westland chopper scam. Though Tyagi’s name has been heard along with the scam since a long time, latest observations by a Italian court has landed him in much trouble. The Italian court has recently commented that huge bribes must have been taken by the family of Tyagi to facilitate the Chopper deal. There was an estimate that almost 75 crores might have been bribed to Tyagi in the scam.
This former Air Chief has allegedly changed the rules regarding the Helicopter needs for the Air Force, which gave the Agusta company an opportunity to enter the bid. He has changed the height restriction from 18,000 ft to 15,000 ft which benefited the company, but was certainly disaterous to the defence community. Though Tyagi was quick to deny these charges, CBI has summoned him today to pose a series of questions regarding the validity of his decisions that helped the scam. S.P. Tyagi might even be arrested if his answers prove unsatisfactory to the probing officials.
