Questionable Fund Raising by Political Parties

Political parties are sourcing a major chunk of their funds from unidentified donors, according to their income-tax returns. Donors' lists and tax returns filed by the Congress, BJP, NCP and BSP for the past five years show they have not identified those who account for most of their funding. For instance, the Congress collected at least Rs 978 crore through sale of coupons in the five years till 2008-09, for which it has not provided any contributors' list to authorities. In comparison, contributions collected by the ruling party with donors' names account for a mere Rs 85 crore in the same period. The BJP, which has not proved as successful in gathering funds while in opposition, has made Rs 30 crore through sale of its Ajivan Sahyog Nidhi coupons in the five years between 2005 and 2009. In comparison, it has recieved Rs 95 crore from identified donors.     The BSP, despite its smaller size, has been more successful and innovative in its collection of funds. The party received more than Rs 200 crore through cash donations in just two years (2007-08 and 2008-09). It has not made any disclosure about who its contributors are, claiming that all donations received by it are below Rs 20,000. When I-T authorities tried to unearth the identities of its donors, the BSP successfully argued that all its contributions in cash are made by poor supporters, out of love and affection for the party leader.     The Representation of People Act states that political parties are required to submit details of contributions received in excess of Rs 20,000 from any person or a company. Those familiar with the issue feel that it is no coincidence that most of the donations don't exceed Rs 20,000 and thus contributors remain unidentified. While the I-T department finds nothing amiss about it, the pattern of parties getting funds from people who wish to stay anonymous has engaged the attention of anti-graft campaigners.

Mining Baron Gali's Routine in Chanchalguda Jail

There's a saying in Telugu "Chakkanamma Chikkinaa Andamgaane Vuntundi", so is with mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy, who is cooling heels along with his brother-in-law BV Srinivasa Redyy in Chanchalguda jail for the past six days. The Mr. Richie Rich is the richest even in jail! Undertrial prisoner No. 696 Gali Janardhana Reddy has carried Rs 30,000 into the Chanchalguda jail and that makes the Karnataka politician, perhaps the richest inmate. When he was strip searched on his entry into the jail on September 5, the cash-rich Gali declared the huge amount of cash on him. When the CBI woke him up at 4 am at his Bellary house, the mining baron grabbed whatever cash he could hold before they arrested him. The Rs 30,000 that Gali brought to the prison has been deposited in what is known as the Prisoners Property Account (PPA). Not to be left behind, his brother-in-law too carried Rs 20,000 to the jail. His money has also been deposited in the PPA account. With the cash they have got, both Janardhana Reddy and Srinivas Reddy can buy whatever they want to from the prison canteen. However, they cannot make any cash transactions. They will be given tokens for Rs 2, Rs 5 or Rs 10 and with this they can make their purchases, which they have been doing. It is learnt that they bought toothpaste, tooth brushes and biscuits, which they are entitled to. Gali Janardhana Reddy and his associate B V Srinivas Reddy, whose UT No. is 697, have a view of small Shiva temple right from the prison cell which they are sharing. Another undertrial has also been lodged in the fourth barrack 'D' cell, that they have been lodged in. If Gali Janardhana Reddy and Srinivas Reddy were put only in the fourth barrack, they would have had to share space with more than 30 inmates but the 'cell' that has been given to them, allows them some amount of privacy. They use the attached toilet inside but the problem is with the bath. Along with other prisoners, the two have to take bath out in the open under the trees. The 44-year-old Janardhana Reddy, it is learnt, has been looking weary. When he was brought into jail, Gali, who is 5ft 9inches tall, weighed 93 kg. The 5ft 4inches tall Srinivas Reddy weighed 103 kg. Having spent already six days in the jail, the diet will sure reflect on their weight soon. On Saturday, Gali had some more visitors wanting to see him, but the jail authorities did not allow them in. However, prisons authorities did allow T H Suresh Babu, BJP MLA of Kampli in Bellary, Karnataka inside the jail. Suresh Babu is nephew of former Karnataka minister B Sreeramulu. Both on Friday and Saturday, it was expected that Gali Janardhana Reddy's wife would come to the jail to visit her husband but this did not happen. In fact, the huge crowds which thronged the jail even on Friday to possibly see if they could meet Gali were not there on Saturday. They were, however, some groups which came and spent a few hours waiting to be called in.

Nagam Floats Non-political TNS to Acheive Telangana

Estranged senior TDP leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy, who quit the party along with three others recently, launched his own outfit Telangana Nagaara Samithi (TNS) from his favourite Umamaheshwaram temple at Atchampet in Mahbubnagar district on Friday. At the launch of TNS, Nagam said Lord Shiva would be the guiding force for his new outfit which he said was not a political party. "Let me clarify that TNS is not a political party. It's only a platform where all like-minded people fighting for Telangana could come together to achieve the goal," he said. After performing special pujas at the Shiva temple in the morning, he took out a massive rally of his supporters from the temple, which is on the outskirts of Atchampet, to the main town centre. The former TDP minister was accompanied by his friends - MLAs Venugopala Chary, Harishwar Reddy and Jogu Ramanna - who had also quit TDP along with him. Speaking in the launch function, Nagam said  "I am inviting all the leaders and supporters of the Telangana cause to TNS that would provide a single platform to take the movement forward." He said he would undertake tours of all Telangana districts to mobilise the support of the people for the movement and described TNS as a strong and stable organisation for achieving separate Telangana. He told he was forced to quit TDP because of Chandrababu Naidu's attitude towards Telangana issue. "He has failed to keep his promise and efforts were made to muzzle our voices in the party. That's why we had to come out of TDP," he said.

Is CBI The Reason For KCR's Silence

TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao is wellknown for his acrimonious outbursts and also as an orator of great skills. In fact he is the leader who has taken 'separate Telangana demand' to the village level and also was successful to a great extent in making people believe whatever he said. But all of a sudden the vociferous leader has been keeping silent lately. Why this sudden transformation of KCR took place? According to reliable sources, KCR has handed over his politics to his son and heir KTR. KCR who was just an ordinary man has earned crores of rupees through his political manipulations. The volatile leader, who has blackmailed the Congress party and earned a lot, has invested the money in a newspaper, TV channel and valuable lands. All these benefits accrued to him during the regime of Y S Rajasekhara Reddy. He has diverted all the money he has earned through dubious means - into real estate and shipping companies of Maharashtra and Gujarat. He has also invested in several other business ventures, through his son. It is a known fact that he has entered into an agreement with YSR to maintain silence on Telangana, in return for monetary gain of hundreds of crores. It is said, KCR is now afraid that the CBI which started investigation into Jagan's properties would also investigate into his. Both KCR and KTR are not able to actively participate either in the Telangana movement or media conferences as they fear the CBI. They are very much afraid that if the CBI starts investigating into the happenings during the Congress regime, their own shady deals might come to light. This is apparently the reason for their silence. The CBI is also making a cautious approach towards KCR as he is a Parliament Member.

Delhi Blast: Next Target Ahmedabad Say Terror e-mails

Consequent to Delhi High Court bomb blast on Wednesday, foue e-mails have been received so far. Two emails claiming responsibility for the Delhi High Court blast were sent to Delhi Police on Friday. One of the mails is apparently from the terror group Indian Mujahiddeen and originated from Moscow. It claims Ahmedabad will be the next target. The email offers a code that warns of the next attack. "The numbers read as Ahmedabad," said Home Minister P Chidambaram, who described the contents of the email as "simple amateurish code" but stressed, "We are taking it seriously... the Gujarat government has been alerted." All emails are being carefully studied by the National Investigating Agency (NIA) which has been asked to handle the inquiry into the latest terror attack in Delhi. The first was received by NDTV and another TV channel on Wednesday and was purportedly from terrorist group HuJI or Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami. That note said that the Supreme Court would be attacked next if the death sentence for Afzal Guru is not commuted. Mr Guru has been convicted for the 2001 attack at the Indian Parliament. The email was traced to a cybercafe in Kishtwar near Jammu; the sender is believed to be in his teens; a sketch of his will be released today. A second email was sent to a TV channel yesterday; the sender claims to be a member of the Indian Mujahideen, but sources say the email, written in Hindi, does not follow the pattern of earlier emails sent by the IM claiming responsibility for terror attacks. This email has yet to be traced. The NIA has asked Google for assistance. The third email, discussed today by Mr Chidambaram, is sent from an account named "killindian@yahoo" and reads, "This is to inform you that we Indian Mujahideen claims the terror attack on Delhi High Court. I just want you to pass a message to the Indian government that next blast will be so cruel that you people won't be able to forget it for decay (decades) and if you are willing to know the next attack it is 1,8,5,13,4,1,2,1,4 till you come to know what it stands for the next blast will be done if you have any question get back soon because we don't have time for anything. Ali Saed el-Hoori." The fourth email was sent from an account named "Chhotu mian" also threatens of an attack in Ahmedabad.

Betting on Jagan Arrest Running Into Crores

The betting hub of Rayalaseema region, Proddatur, some pockets of Kadapa town, Pulivendula, Jammalamadugu and Rayachoti are bustling with betting on YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's arrest in disproportionate assets case. After Amar Singh, it is Y S Jaganmohan Reddy's turn to go to jail. This is the talk doing the rounds in Jagan Reddy's home turf of Kadapa district. Sources told, people in this region believe that Kadapa 'muddu bidda' Jagan would be sent to jail sooner or later, a heavy betting running into crores of rupees on the timing of his arrest is on. The betters in Proddatur have fixed different rates for different time slots for Jagan's arrest even as the bids continue to pour in. For instance, the betting rate for his arrest in a week's time is different from the rate fixed for his arrest in a fortnight. The betters have even come up with monthly and bi-monthly packages on the arrest of the Kadapa MP. "The rate fixed for Jagan's arrest in one month's time is much higher than the rate fixed for the arrest in next two months," sources said. Though the stakes are high, the enthusiasm of those willing to bet is very high. Police, meanwhile, are helpless. "Since it's not an organized betting like cricket betting, we cannot proceed against those involved in the racket as there would be no proof," a senior police official said. The general belief is that if Jagan were to be arrested, the reaction would be strong. "It could even lead to stray violence in some pockets of the district as and when it's effected," say the locals.

Akbaruddin Owaisi Booked For Murder

Four months ago MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi was attacked by his rivals near Barkas in Old City, in which one person from the rival group was shot dead while Akbaruddin who sustained bullet and stab injuries is still reeling under the after-effects of the attack. The case, which is in court now, took an unexpected turn with the police registering a case of murder against Akbar and two others on Thursday, charging them with murder and criminal conspiracy. While police had acted swiftly and arrested the key accused, Mohammed Bin Omar Yafai alias Mohammed Pahelwan, and 14 others after the April 30th attack on Akbaruddin, it did not register any case against the MIM MLA nor was any magisterial inquiry conducted into the firing. When the high court was informed on August 24 that the police had not registered any case against Akbaruddin Owaisi, it directed the accused to lodge a complaint. Awad Yafai, then filed a complaint with the Central Crime Station on Wednesday, alleging that it was Owaisi who had invited his relatives for discussion at a place in Chandrayangutta and started abusing them in filthy language. When his younger brother Ibrahim asked Owaisi to check his language, the MLA and his supporters attacked him. Awad and others tried to rescue Ibrahim who had already been shot at by a revolver. Later Awad and another of his relative were also shot at, he said in the complaint. The police who had then refused to take complaint against Owaisi, Balala and others registered the case now and issued an FIR. The three accused were booked under Sections 302 (murder), 148 (rioting, armed with weapons), 147 (rioting) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. Meanwhile, the high court granted bail to Mohammed Pahelwan, and five others. The others who got bail include Eisa Yafai, Yahya Yafai, Fazal Yafai, Faisal Yafai and Hasan Yafai. All of them are expected to be released from prison by Friday evening once they complete the legal formalities in the lower court. Earlier, the high court had granted bail to two other accused in the same case. The first to get bail was Younus Bin Omar Yafai, elder brother of Mohammed Pahelwan. On August 24 the court gave bail to Awad Yafai who was also injured by a gun shot fired by the personal security guard of MIM MLA Ahmed Balala during the attack on Owaisi.

Jagan's Tainted Image Keeps Delhi Leaders at Bay

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who was desparate to garner support from the leaders of all the opposition parties, made a four-day trip to the national capital. But during this trip, he failed to garner any support, the sources said. As per the sources, YSR Congress president Jagan Mohan Reddy failed to impress the national leaders that he was being politically targeted by the CBI. In particular, the two national parties, Congress and BJP, were unmoved by his gestures and pleas. Even though Jagan could get an audience with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday on the pretext of presenting a memorandum on farmers' issues, he failed to convince opposition leader Sushma Swaraj to grant him an appointment. Even, leaders like Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sharad Pawar, Laloo Prasad Yadav and Farooq Abdullah, all of whom Jagan had managed to meet, were cautious enough not to reveal anything to the media regarding their meetings since Jagan is facing charges of corruption in the state. Also, the MPs who are his late father YSR’s protégés did not meet him reportedly due to his 'tainted' image. "Jagan may talk about lack of evidence and political vendetta in the CBI case but many in the party, including some of his loyalists are convinced that his meteoric rise in the business is something to do with his father's position as the chief minister," said a Congress MP. Jagan even talked about offering support to the UPA government in future also, but that too did not create much flutter in Delhi, say the sources. Some MPs who are in touch with party general secretary Rahul Gandhi said Jagan's BJP connections were well known to the high command. In the letters he circulated to political leaders in Delhi, he charged the Congress with launching a political witch hunt against him after YSR's death. While his mother Vijayalakshmi equated Jagan's case with Bofors and asked why Congress president Sonia Gandhi's house was not searched and why were the family members not questioned by the CBI, the Kadapa MP criticised the PM in the 2G spectrum case. "In this background, is it not possible to take his offer of surrender seriously," said Nizamabad MP Madhu Yashki Goud.

Advani's PM Ambition Taking Shape

Now it seems to be beyond doubt that the 83 year old BJP veteran LK Advani is still nurturing his ambition to become Prime Minister of India. It was clearly evident by the sudden announcement he made on Thursday that he would undertake yet another rath yatra across the country. His decision took party colleagues by surprise because the yatra would bring the focus back on him in a scenario where the BJP had resolved not to project anyone as its prime ministerial candidate for the next Lok Sabha elections in 2014. BJP chief Nitin Gadkari had recently told in an interview that no individual leader would be projected as a prime ministerial candidate and that a collective team of top leaders would be showcased instead. But Advani seems to have other plans. "I have decided to take out a yatra against corruption. Its focus will be good governance and clean politics," Advani said at a press conference. He said he had spoken about his decision to Gadkari and other top party leaders, who had endorsed the move immediately. Not only that, flanked at the press conference by Sushma Swaraj and Aurun Jaitley, leaders of the opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, respectively, Advani even dared the government to arrest him in the Cash-for-vote scam. A few days ago, Advani minced no word in conveying to Gadkari and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at a key meeting in Ujjain that "the people rallied for a leader rather than a party." Later, the buzz was that the RSS intended to tell Advani he must not insist on projecting himself again as prime ministerial candidate and make way for younger leaders to try their luck. Putting all this together, a senior BJP leaders said "Advani's decision is a surprise move that shows he is very much in the race for prime ministership."

Delhi HC Blast: HuJI or IM, Who Did it?

Within 48 hours of a high intensity bomb blast that killed 13 people so far and left more than 70 injured at the Delhi High Court, investigators received yet another e-mail allegedly from banned terrorist organisation Indian Mujahideen (IM). This is a second e-mail since Wednesday which was sent by a terrorist organisation claiming responsibility for the attack. Hours after the blast on Wednesday, an e-mail claiming responsibility for the terrorist attack was allegedly sent by members of the banned Harkat-ul Jihad Islami (HuJI). "HuJI was not responsible for the blast, it was carried out by the Indian Mujahideen. We had made plans to target Delhi High Court for long and we decided to do it on Wednesday because it is the busiest day at the Delhi High Court," claims the e-mail said to be sent by Indian Mujahideen (IM) on Thursday. "We will again carry out an attack on Tuesday outside a shopping complex. Stop it if you can," it further stated. The email allegedly sent by 'Chotu' who claims to be a member of the Indian Mujahideen and used a Gmail address. "We are taking this second e-mail very seriously and investigations are going on," said Indian Internal Security Secretary UK Bansal. The home ministry has already approached Google to help track down the e-mail. Meanwhile, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is spearheading the blast probe, announced a reward of INR500,000 (PKR 948,000) to anyone who provides information about the terrorists involved in the blast. NIA chief SC Sinha also met Delhi Police commissioner BK Gupta and members of the special cell (anti-terrorist unit) to discuss the ongoing probe. Apart from tracking organisations like HuJI and IM, intelligence agencies are also tracking members of the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), Khalistan Commando Force (KCF) and Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), suspecting their involvement in the blast.

T-region Students And Employees to Intensify T-stir

The Joint Action Committee of Telangana Employees (TEJAC) on Wednesday unanimously resolved to build pressure on elected representatives to resign from their posts and work for the success of the 'Sakala Janula Samme' beginning from September 13. Nearly 450 office-bearers, affiliated to 130 associations, who met at a function hall in the city on Wednesday, decided to intensify the agitation by restricting the movement of MPs and MLAs in the region and insisting for their resignations before the start of the strike. The meeting was also attended by political JAC affiliates and intellectuals. The JAC employees resolved to continue their fight against the Seemandhra government, Seemandhra leaders and elected representatives trying to scuttle the movement. "We are fighting for our rights. Since MPs and MLAs have failed to discharge their duties, government employees are forced to take a direct plunge into the agitation and intensify it. We are ready to resist any attempt by Seemandhra forces to dilute the 'Sakala Janula Samme'. If MPs and MLAs do not get their resignations accepted, then the strike would be aimed at them till they quit their posts," said V Srinivas Goud, president of Telangana Gazzetted Officers Association. In unison with the TEJAC, the Osmania University Students Joint Action Committee (OUSJAC) has also called for a week-long agitation starting Thursday. The students are planning to take out a rally inside the OU campus demanding resignation of TDP and Congress legislators. The students have also called for a boycott of classes on September 13. The students are expected to march to government offices to offer their support to employees who are planning to go on strike. "We will hold a Telangana Atma Gaurava Sabha, a meeting of students from across the Telangana region on September 17," said P Kailash Neta, spokesperson, TSJAC. The students said that they have offered their support to legislators who have resigned for the 'T' cause already.

Goud Re-entry to TDP Costs it 4 MLAs

Four senior leaders of Telugu Desam Party, who were already suspended for anti-party activities submitted their resignations from the primary membership of the party on Wednesday. The four MLAs are Nagam Janardana Reddy, K Harishswar Reddy, S Venugopalachary and Jogu Ramanna. The four MLAs had earlier submitted their resignations from the Assembly along with the legislators from the other political parties in the Telangana region in order to mount pressure on the separate state issue. Superficially it appears that these MLAs have tendered their resignations for the cause of separate Telangana. But, the real cause is something entirely different say the informed sources. The reasoning seems to be true when we dwell in to the past of these leaders. To begin with, Nagam Janardhan Reddy has started his political career with the TDP and became minister twice in Naidu's cabinet. He was elected from Nagarkurnool in Mahbubnagar district in 2009 and was made deputy leader of the legislature party in the Assembly. He was also made chairman of Public Accounts Committee by Naidu. However, after the 're-entry of T Devender Goud', another Telangana leader, into the party fold, he was sidelined by the party chief. Among those who quit the Telugu Desam party, Venugopalachary was considered a close confidant of Naidu. He had also served as Union minister in the United Front government. He was a trusted colleague of Naidu and stood by him during the 1995 split in the TDP. In the 2009 elections, he was elected from Mudhole constituency and he too was sidelined by Naidu after Goud's re-entry. Since then, Venugopalachary has been playing an active role in Telangana politics. He said that he had decided to quit the party as it has failed to take a clear stand on the Telangana issue. R Harishwar Reddy held the deputy speaker post when the TDP was in power. He also felt sidelined in the party after the return of Devender Goud which widened the gap between Naidu and himself. Known as pro-farmer leader, Harishwar wields a lot of clout in his Parigi constituency and in Ranga Reddy district, which happens to be adjacent to Devender Goud's constituency. Ofcourse, Jogu Ramanna is said to be close to Nagam and naturally, he followed suit Nagam. What observers say is, Devender Goud is the common factor of dissent for all the four leaders. Nagam was heading the Telangana Forum prior to E Dayakar Rao. He didn't convince Naidu to take a favourable stance towards Telangana, instead tried to corner Chandrababu by pressurising him to give party's consent in writing to Pranab Mukherji in Telanagana's favour. Love for Telangana isn't the real reason for leaving TDP, but the actual 'bone of contention' was being sidelined on Goud's re-entry into the party.
