  • Apple CEO to meet Modi in India trip

      Apple CEO Tim Cook is set to make his maiden visit to India. He is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 21 amid high expectations that the company may announce local manufacturing partnerships in India, to be in line with the government's 'Make in India' programme. This might be set up in Maharashtra.   "It is already the third largest smartphone market in the world. But I view India as where China was may be seven to ten years ago (and) from that point of view, and I think there's a really great opportunity there," Cook had said as he announced a 56% growth in iPhone sales in India in the quarter that ended March 2016. Looks like Apple is clearly excited about the prospects in India market.

    Petrol prices hiked 2nd time this month

      Petrol and diesel prices were increased yet again this month. Petrol price on Monday increased by Rs 0.83 per litre and diesel by Rs 1.26 per litre. This comes right after the elections in different parts of India just got completed. The first hike was an increase of Rs 1.06 and Rs 2.94 per litre on petrol and diesel respectively on April 30.   Indian Oil Corporation in a statement said, "The current level of international product prices of petrol and diesel and the rupee-US Dollar exchange rate warrant increase in price of petrol and diesel, the impact of which is being passed on to the consumers with this price revision."

    Virat Kohli Breaks IPL all time record!

      Virat Kohli's knock yesterday helped him break Chris Gayle’s record of most runs in a single IPL season. During his unbeaten 75-run knock against KKR on Monday, he surpassed Chris Gayle’s 733-run mark to create a new record on his name. Virat's 752* is the most by any batsman in a single season of the IPL. Chris Gayle is the second best with his 733 in 2012.   Kohli has been on a record breaking spree this IPL as he had earlier broken Robin Uthappa's record for most runs by an Indian batsman in a single season, making 109 off 55 balls against Gujarat Lions in his previous match. With that ton, he had also become the first batsman to hit three centuries in a single IPL season.

    Vote to get free movie tickets in Chennai

    Chennai is going to polls today and some establishments in the city have come up with unique ideas to make more people go out to the poll stations and cast their vote. A prominent cinema theatre had posted on Facebook saying, "Go vote & get free movie tickets, post the selfie of your inked finger in the comments," this in order to avail free movie tickets. Another chain has advertised saying that a special discount on food would be given when shown the inked finger!

    Head of an MNC commits suicide in Delhi

    Encylopedia Britannica's Chief Operating Officer, Vineet Whig,  has committed suicide by jumping from the 19th floor of the apartment building in Gurugram. According to police, Vineet was found inside his apartment's ventilator shaft with a suicide note in his pocket. His father has had a heart attack after hearing the news and is being treated now. His suicide note said, "I am taking my own life, no one is responsible. I am unable to cope. I am sorry. I am depressed. I see no way out except for suicide. Yes, I am a coward. I should have faced life." He is survived by his father, wife and three children.

    Gujarat first lady CM to be replaced?

    According to reports the first Chief Minister of Gujarat, Anandiben Patel may be replaced before 2017 Assembly elections. Her failure to handle the Patel agitations and Congress' victory in the local bodies polls in the rural areas added to the poor show for which she could be asked to leave the CM post. Nitinbhai Patel who is currently the Health, Medical Education, Family Welfare, Road and Building, Capital Project Minister in the Gujarat government might be replacing her. While she could be made the Governor of the state.

    Gujarat MP falls into open drain

    A BJP parliamentarian from Jamnagar, Gujarat, Poonamben Maadam, received injuries on her head, shoulder and foot when she fell into the 8-feet deep drain while talking to municipal officials over a drive to remove encroachers in one of Gujarat’s biggest city. Poonamben was visiting a slum in her constituency of Jamnagar city, about 330 kilometres from the state capital of Gandhinagar. According to her doctor S Maheshwari, the leader suffered a 4-inch deep injury on her head besides injuries on her shoulder and foot.

    Suresh Raina names new born daughter!

    India cricketer Suresh Raina on Sunday became a father after his wife Priyanka Chaudhary gave birth to a baby girl at a private hospital in Amsterdam. His daughter, who has been named Gracia, was born at 2pm local time. Raina tweeted: "Welcome my beautiful daughter. #GraciaRaina. Long wait but totally worth it. #ProudFather. She is getting dressed up for her photoshoot" Raina flew out to the Netherlands on May 10th to be with his pregnant wife, missing an IPL match in nine years. He missed the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Raina had tied the nuptial knot with Priyanka last year in April. Priyanka works as an investment banker in Amsterdam and is a childhood sweetheart of the Raina.    

    Subramanian Swamy invited to visit Tibet

    BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy has said that he has been invited by a Chinese think tank to meet top officials of the Chinese government and visit Tibet. Swamy will also address a university audience there at the invitation of Institute of Foreign Affairs, a think tank of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A statement issued by his office said here that besides visiting Tibet, he will also be taken to Kailash Mansarovar as a guest of the Chinese government.

    Air India Offloads 75-Yr-Old Wheelchair User

    A 75-year-old woman on a wheelchair was offloaded from an Air India flight from New Delhi to New York after being told the flight was overbooked. She was scheduled to travel to New York for her grandson's first birthday. Daughter of the woman tweeted for help: "Air India has ofloadsd my 70y mother from her US flight becoz of overbooking. She is wheelchairbound and scared. Please help! @airindiain" She was finally given a transit flight via Heathrow at 2:45 in the morning after an hour of commotion.

    Man's Hunger Strike outside Sachin's home

      Seeking justice in a land grab case, a 33-year-old Pune resident has now pinned his hopes on the legendary former cricketer. He has decided to stage an indefinite hunger stir outside Tendulkar's residence on Perry Cross Road in Bandra West on May 18 to draw attention to his plight. Tendulkar was the former brand ambassador of Amit Enterprises, which allegedly bought the land for a very less amount.   "We have heard a lot about Sachin. Apart from being a legendary cricketer and a Member of Parliament, he is a very humble and helping person; one who joins the fight against corruption. We are staging a hunger strike outside his home with prayers for help to get justice from the builder," read the letter. Pointing out that Tendulkar has "a moral responsibility towards the people", Kurhade said, "Irrespective of whether he helps us or not, I will be his fan forever."

    Rs 570 crore seized in Tamil Nadu

      Electoral officials in Tamil Nadu on Saturday seized about Rs 570 crore from three containers during checking in Tirupur district. The men in cars, who claimed to be policemen from Andhra Pradesh but were not in uniform, told the officials they were transferring Rs 570 crore from State Bank of India in Coimbatore to Vishakhapatnam branches. The containers escorted by three cars, did not halt, but officials chased them and stopped them near Chengapalli.

    Buddhist monk murdered in Bangladesh

      In yet another murder in Bangladesh, an elderly Buddhist monk was found hacked to death on Saturday. This is another case added to a number of murders of religious minorities and secular activists in the Muslim-majority nation. Monk, 75, appeared to have been attacked by at least four people at the Buddhist temple in Baishari, some 350km southeast of Dhaka early on Saturday morning. Police said that he became a monk a year and half ago and was getting death threats but no one took it seriously.

    UK Muslim mayor visits favorite temple

      London's first Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan visited London's famous Shri Swaminarayan temple in Neasden, a few days before he was elected. These pictures have gone viral on social media now. He was also seen interacting with people at temple, he also participated in some of the rituals. In one of the pictures, a Hindu priest s is seen tying a string around his wrist.   He said, "Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Neasden is one of my favourite places in London," in a post on social media days before he won with a thumping majority.

    ISIS wanted to join Kanhaiya Protests

      In a startling revelation the recruits of Islamic State (ISIS) have revealed that the Islamic State recruits in India wanted to take advantage of the student movement that broke out in several cities after the arrest of JNU student union president Kanhaiya Kumar.   If reports are to be believed, on February 19, when Kanhaiya was in Tihar jail on sedition charges and students of several universities were holding demonstrations demanding his release, ISIS's Ahmad Ali had asked 19-year-old Ashiq Ahmad alias Raja of Hooghly, West Bengal, to infiltrate the movement and burn vehicles and oil tankers using petrol.

    Chennaites postpone vacation to Vote!

    The month of May is vacation time for families, but many in Chennai have decided to postpone their travels, for business or leisure, only after they cast their vote. As a result, buses, flights and trains are running full in the days following the election and travel agents are struggling to ensure their clients get to cram in a two-week break before school reopens.   The railways is also looking at the reservation pattern of trains to assess requirement for special trains, and have introduced a Chennai-Ahmedabad express for May 17.

    Apple shares drop to 2-Year low

      Apple Inc.'s stock tumbled to a near two-year low. It dropped below $90 for the first time since 2014. That was enough to lose the title of the world's largest company to Google parent Alphabet, whose shares lost just 0.3 percent. Faced with lackluster sales of smartphones in the United States, Apple has bet on China as a major new growth engine. But progress there has been disappointing.

    Bihar Jungle Raj;Journalist shot dead

      Senior journalist Rajdeo Ranjan was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Siwan, Bihar on Friday. He was the bureau chief of Hindi daily 'Hindustan'. He had been writing against law-breakers of the area. Rajan, 42, was fired at when he was travelling on his motorcycle near the fruit market on Station Road at around 7:45 pm, Superintendent of Police Saurabh Kumar said. He was hit on the head and neck and died on the way to hospital.

    Raina to miss first ever IPL match

      IPL team Gujarat Lions' coach Brad Hodge, on Friday, confirmed that captain Suresh Raina will be missing his first ever match in the Indian Premier League history when his team faces Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday. "He is not coming. He is with his wife and child," he told reporters.   "It is a huge loss if someone has almost 4,000 runs in the IPL history. Having said that we have got some players who can step into his shoes. We have players like Dwayne Smith, Aaron Finch, Dinesh Karthik and Dwayne Bravo - they are all match winners. They can step up and win a game from any position," he said. Brendon McCullum is said to lead the side in Raina's absence.
