Writer and producer Kona Venkat has expressed concern over the growing obsession with pan-India films among Telugu star heroes, questioning the long production timelines and lack of planning that are putting producers under financial pressure.

Kona pointed out that several star heroes who once delivered two or three films a year are now taking four to five years to complete a single project. He argued that the industry needs a steady flow of releases to sustain its workforce and keep business moving, rather than having stars remain occupied with one film for years in the pursuit of a pan-India market.

He also criticised directors for failing to plan their projects properly, particularly when it comes to a film’s runtime. Citing the example of a film shot for three hours and 50 minutes, only for nearly two hours of footage to be discarded during editing,

Kona questioned the waste of time and money involved. He said such a lack of clarity can cause massive losses to producers and called for strict action against directors who put their investments at risk through irresponsible filmmaking.

Kona stressed that filmmakers need to approach projects with greater clarity, discipline and financial responsibility. With budgets rising and production schedules stretching, he believes the industry cannot afford to ignore the risks associated with the current trend.

His comments have reignited the debate over Telugu cinema’s pan-India ambitions, with questions emerging about whether the pursuit of a wider market is coming at the cost of production efficiency, regular releases and the financial security of producers.
