SS Rajamouli appears to be taking the world-building in Varanasi a step further. The big fantasy time travel film is reportedly set to feature a fictional language created specifically for the film, adding another intriguing layer to its time-travel narrative.
The language is said to come into play during one of the film’s time-travel sequences. The characters reportedly encounter a cave with inscriptions written in an ancient script, and decoding those writings becomes part of the mystery surrounding the sequence. Instead of simply creating a few unfamiliar words for the scene, the makers have reportedly worked with a linguistic expert to develop the language with its own script, grammar and syntax.
This immediately brings back memories of Baahubali. Rajamouli had previously created the fictional Kiliki language for the Kalakeya warriors in Baahubali: The Beginning, with writer and lyricist Madhan Karky developing it. Kiliki became one of the memorable elements of the film, particularly because of the distinctive way it sounded and was used by the Kalakeya characters.
However, Varanasi appears to be attempting something more elaborate. If the reports are accurate, the new language is not merely being used to give a particular group of characters a distinct identity; its written form and ability to be decoded could actually have a role in the story. That makes it an interesting detail to watch out for when Rajamouli unveils more of the film.
Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is being mounted as a large-scale time-travel adventure spanning different eras and locations. The film is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
