Delhi HC upholds death sentence for Nirbhaya’s rapists

The Delhi High Court has confirmed and upheld the death sentence for the four men convicted of the fatal gang-rape of 23-year-old ‘Nirbahya’ in December, 2012 .Convicts Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan and Akshay Thakur will hang till death for raping and killing the young woman on a moving bus, the High Court ruled and upholding the trial court’s order given in September 2012. A case under the rarest of rare category where Capital Punishment is given has also led to the formulation of the Nirbhaya Act. Their defense lawyers said earlier they would appeal to the Supreme Court if the death sentences were upheld. As of now the four of them are in Tihar Jail and the fifth accused Ram Singh died in prison in an apparent case of suicide. The sixth accused who was a minor at the time of assault has been give 3 years in reformatory penalization as per Indian Juvenile laws even though it was said that he had caused the most grievous injuries to the girl and he will soon be out as his three year term is to end soon.
