In a major development in Turkey, a group within Turkey's military has attempted to overthrow the government. President Tayyip Erdogan who had been holidaying on the coast when the coup was launched, flew into Istanbul before dawn on Saturday and was shown on TV appearing among a crowd of supporters outside the airport. Gunfire and explosions rocked both the main city Istanbul and capital Ankara in a chaotic night, but by the early hours of Saturday there were indications that the coup was crumbling. Arrests of officers were under way, and it would go higher up the ranks, culminating in the cleansing of the military.
According to media reports senior Turkish official says rebel soldiers have been warned they will be shot down if they attempt to use more military aircraft. Airlines diverted its flights en route to Turkey and canceled departures from Istanbul's Ataturk Airport as the coup attempt unfolded in the country. Turkish media reports also stated that 4 coup-attempting soldiers, including 1 high-ranked, neutralized by police after attempt to take over state TV channel TRT. Turkey PM said that more than 130 soldiers have been arrested for the coup plot.
