Around 95 NRI men are wanted by the Central Crime Station women's police station in the city for harassing their wives. Sources said that most of the accused against whom cases of harassment are pending are from the US followed by UK, Europe and the Gulf countries. The cops said that they were still receiving complaints against NRI husbands even after awareness campaigns had been taken up on a large scale.
CCS women police station inspector, Ms Jyothi Lakshmi, said, "The cases are in several stages of investigation. In some cases, we have sent red corner notices to the Interpol. We have conducted awareness campaigns for brides and their parents to check the antecedents of NRI bridegrooms before marriage. But in most cases there is no proper background check done." Non-bailable warrants have been issued against several of the NRI accused. "In most cases the investigation is not going ahead as they (the accused) are not available," said a CCS official.
