Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a stern message to black money hoarders said his government will go through all personal records since Independence, if needed, to check for unaccounted wealth and that no violator would be spared. “This is a major cleanliness programme. This is not to harass anyone,” the prime minister said. He assured the people that money that has been looted will be brought back and that the rules will be the same for everyone. “I will check records since independence. If I come across unaccounted cash, nobody will be spared,” said PM Modi. PM Narendra Modi thanked Indians for welcoming the demonetisation move of his government and hit back at those who criticised the decision. "I salute my countrymen. People stood in line for four hours, six hours but accepted the decision in national interest the way people of Japan tackled the aftermath of the 2011 disaster," he said. Since the government move on Tuesday night, people have been flocking to banks and ATMs in a bid to exchange old currency.
