All it takes, to feel and know how it is like to be in a jail, is just Rs. 500. If you are looking for some fun and adventure and aren't scared of experimenting, you can book yourself a night's stay at the Medak Jail in Telangana for a hands-on experience of real prison life. The Telangana state prisons department has come up with an innovative initiative to let a citizen feel the life of a prisoner. At its Heritage Jail Museum in Sangareddy, the authorities would soon take bookings for the cells. The 220-year-old District Central Jail has now been converted into a museum, is offering this 24-hour confinement under an innovative initiative called "Feel the Jail". A sum of Rs. 500 allows you to spend 24-hours in the prison which was built in 1796 during the Nizam-era.
The prison building which was abandoned in 2012 has recently been restored and contains 8 male barracks, 1 female barrack, a kitchen, dispensary, mess hall, isolation room, old superintendent's office and three watch towers that housed 110 inmates. The premises is spread over 5 acres of land area. During the stay, the inmates will be provided with a prison uniform made of khadi, a steel meal plate and glass, a mug besides washing soap, bathing soap, bedding and other facilities as per state prison manual, in addition to a fan. According to Laxmi Narasimha, Deputy Superintendent of the Jail, no tourist has so far availed this offer. A shorter tour of the jail museum is also on offer. The jail museum was opened on June 5 by Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy. The entry fee for adults is Rs. 10 and for children is Rs. 5.
