Violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman passes away

Noted violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman (82) has breathed his last at Chennai on Monday. He was born in Chennai on 17th September, 1930. He begins his musical journey at a very tender age of 12 years. His invention Lalgudi Bani, which highlights his instrumental talents, brings him special appreciations from the music lovers. He is also known as great composer. He has composed several Krithis, Tillanas and Varnams for carnatic music and also has dance compositions to his credit. He has tens of students who glorify his training.
He has worked along with maestros Bala Subramaniam, Musiri Subramania Iyer, Maharajapuram Santhanam, Ramnad Krishnan, Madurai and many other vocalists. He was survived by wife and son Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and daughter GJR Vijaya Lakshmi are also violinists. He has won several awards during his long musical journey.
He was honored with Padma Shri (1972); Padma Bhushan (2001); Nada Vidya Rathnakara by East West Exchange in New York, 'Vadya Sangeetha Kalaratna' by Bharathi Society, New York; 'Sangeetha Choodamani' by Federation of Music Sabhas, Madras in 1971 and in 1972; State Vidwan of Tamil Nadu by the Government of Tamil Nadu and Sangeetha Natak Academy award in 1979 etc. He also received honorary citizenship of Maryland USA in 1994. He won National Film Award as the best music director award (2006) for the film Srinagaram. He became fellow member of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi in year 2010.
