More than a dozen people were blinded after they have undergone cataract surgery in a free eye camp in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. A private organization has conducted this free eye camp where 33 cataract operations were performed. After a month, half of them have lost their sight.
When the victims complained that their eyes started hurting after operation, the organizers of the camp, Nandyal Diocese, asked them to go to various hospitals for check up, later only to inform the victims that they won't get back their vision again. Meanwhile, the State Health ministry has asked for a detailed report from district officials and has promised strict action will be taken.
However, after government interfered, the organizers of the camp, Nandyal Diocese, have suspended the lab technician and agreed to compensate for their alleged medical negligence by bearing further medical expenses of the victims.
