Dadri: Akhlaq & kin booked for cow slaughter

The Dadri incident which has taken India by storm has got a new development. The Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday registered a case of cow slaughter against Mohammad Akhlaq and six members of his family. Akhlaq was killed by a mob at his house in Dadri’s Bishahra village on the night of September 28, 2015. A local court in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday directed the state police to register the FIR under the U.P. Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955, and the Animal Cruelty Act. The police have booked six persons Akhlaq’s wife Ikraman, his ailing mother Asghari, daughter Shaishta, son Danish, brother Jaan Mohammad and his wife under several sections of the act.
Section 3 makes it illegal to slaughter a cow, bull or bullock anywhere in Uttar Pradesh, section 8 allows the accused to be penalised with imprisonment for maximum 7 years as well as fine of Rs 10,000. All the family members, except Jaan Mohammad, were present in the house when the angry mob dragged Akhlaq and Danish out and beat them. Akhlaq was killed and his son Danish seriously injured when a mob attacked their house on the suspicion of eating beef on the night of September 28.
