Thursday at Prakasam barrage when Samaikyandhra and Jaiandhra activists got involved in a verbal duel in front of the Sri Potti Sriramulu statue here. The incident took place when both groups gathered to garland the statue of Sri Potti Sriramulu on his death anniversary.
While a group led by Congress leaders Konjeti Ramesh, Kolanukonda Sivaji and CL Kantha Rao shouted pro-Samaikya Andhra slogans, the group headed by BJP leader Jagannatha Raju raised their voices in favour of Jai Andhra. The two groups had soon started jostling each other with the fracas continuing for half-an-hour. Police reached the spot and pacified the warring groups.
Samaikya Andhra JAC convenor Kolanukonda Sivaji said that it was unfortunate that BJP leaders were trying to drive a wedge between the people of the two regions for political gains. "They have insulted Amarajeevi Potti Sriramulu who gave his life for the formation of Andhra Pradesh," he said. He demanded that BJP leaders apologise immediately and withdraw all future programmes in support of Jai Andhra.
