Right to Die with Diginity

"Killing terminally ill people” the expression used by a Health Minister for the care of a billion population, referring to euthanasia may not have a parallel in callousness it conveys. One is simply aghast that the most sensitive issues in euthanasia of life and death, the state of mind of a person who decides to die with dignity under the most horrendous pain and distress and the most agonized desire, under extreme stress,of the dearest loved ones to uphold that great dignity to let them take the last journey , is being dealt with such insensitivity . Clinical and technical interpretations by a medical practitioners and a lawyers should be kept in their professional spheres and not hurt the feelings of the general public. Traditionally, most people in India for centuries have grown up with a somewhat fatalistic mindset that births, life and death are completely in God's hands, and we are only puppets in His hands. Sadly it even boils down to deaths in accidents and disasters being ' weighed ' up in monetary value ; as evidenced in the alacrity of Ministers offering monetary reliefs to the next of kin with great pomposity and pretended care after such disasters , and doing little else .

Country wide discussions and public debate and the widest publicity on the TV and in the Press will wake up the general public to the necessity of legalizing “the Right to die with dignity '' . No doubt a lot of most atrocious thoughts like the recent outbursts reported on some Ministers and legislature playing down rapes and assaults on women as just peccadillos of the Country's youths . Except in responsible, enlightened societies and groups, only bedlams can be expected in public debates . It will in any case generate a general awareness Bold decisions have to made for legal sanction with the strongest and explicit safeguards to obviate even a single case is not mismanaged.

In the ultimate analysis, religious. Moral and social compulsions are insignificant to uphold a person's conscious right, to die with dignity or the loved ones' agonized decision on someone slipped beyond the ability to express himself or herself. Consensus in the issue of most people in the Country with the fatalistic attitude of everything .
