Google introduces educational app Bolo to improve children’s literacy in India

Google is expanding its suite of apps designed for the Indian market with today’s launch of a new language-learning app aimed at children, called Bolo. The app, which is aimed at elementary school-aged students, leverages technology like Google’s speech recognition and text-to-speech to help kids learn to read in both Hindi and English. The Bolo app is optimised for native Hindi speakers, and uses Google’s speech recognition and text-to-speech technology. Google Bolo app comes with a built-in assistant called Diya that corrects the kid as they read aloud. ‘Diya’ can not only read out the text to your child, but also explain the meaning of English text in Hindi. Interesting, the app is designed to work offline as well without internet connectivity. “We believe technology has the power to help transform teaching and learning, and have been actively directing our products, programs and philanthropy to ensure that all students are able to benefit from it,” Google said in a statement. “Bolo is designed as a reading-tutor app that helps primary grade students to improve their reading. We have been piloting Bolo in 200 villages, and the early results are very encouraging. We are now actively working with a number of nonprofit partners to take it to more people across the country who could benefit from it,” said Nitin Kashyap, Product Manager, Google India. All the reading material on the app is completely free and the initial catalogue from Storyweaver.org.in includes 50 stories in Hindi and 40 in English with more being added soon. Children can also play word games and earn in-app rewards and badges. Also, multiple children can use the same app, and track their progress separately. Over time the difficulty level of recommended stories adjusts to their reading skills.

Google To Partner with Clothing Brand Levis Straus

Internet Gaint Google announced Friday that it is working with iconic U.S. jean maker Levi Strauss to make clothing from specially woven fabric with touch-screen control capabilities.   Google used its annual developers conference in San Francisco to reveal its new Project called Project Jacquard which is named after a Frenchman who invented a type of loom and to spotlight Levi Strauss as its first partner. This new project is handled by Google's ATAP (Advanced technology and projects) Team which is different from Google X lab.   “We are enabling interactive textiles,” Emre Karagozler of ATAP said as the smart fabric was shown off in an area set up to look like cloth coming out of a loom.   “We do it by weaving conductive threads into fabric.   ” The special threads can be woven into a wide array of fabrics, and be made to visually stand out or go unnoticed depending on designers’ wishes.   Conductivity can be limited to desired parts of fabric or spread across entire cloth.   “It is stretchable;it is washable,” Karagozler said as people controlled lights or computer screens with finger strokes on a blue cloth covering a table in the display area behind him.   “It is just like normal fabric.”   Project Jacquard makes it possible to weave touch and gesture interactivity into any textile using standard, industrial looms, according to Google.   Anything involving fabric, from suits or dresses to furniture or carpet, could potentially have computer touch-pad style control capabilities woven.   Conductive yarn is connected to tiny circuits, no bigger than jacket buttons, with miniaturized electronics that can use algorithms to recognize touches or swipes, ATAP said.   The data can be sent wirelessly to smartphones or other devices, enabling actions such as making phone calls or sending messages with brushes of fabric.   “In our hyper-digital world, people constantly struggle to be physically present in their environment while maintaining a digital connection,” said Levi Straus’s head of global product innovation Paul Dillinger, who took part in a Google presentation at the gathering.   “The work that Google and Levi’s are embarking upon with Project Jacquard delivers an entirely new value to consumers with apparel that is emotional, aspirational and functional.” -Ratnakar

Google gets cautious on enforcing zero rating plan in India

It was said that Google is teaming up with Indian telcos to bring something like Airtel Zero where customers would get free access to a certain app or service. But after the severe backlash against this plan and the backing out of major companies from Airtel Zero, Google has decided to wait and remain cautious.   Google hoped to create an environment where ‘telecom operators could put up their zero rating plans and app developers could purchase them to zero-rate the mobile data used by their apps and gain access to a wider customer base but after witnessing a severe backlash against Airtel Zero and Facebook's internet.org it seems Google has now shelved its ideas for any kind of tie ups regarding the zero rating plan with a wait and watch approach.   This is an understandable approach from Google as it cannot afford any bad PR in the country. The idea of having a select few services for free goes against the principles of net neutrality, which talks about having the same internet access for all sites and no preferential treatment for developers that are willing to pay in order to include their services.   It was earlier reported  that Government was to block zero rating plans to support Net Neutrality. Citing a senior official from the telecom department,  a news report revealed that the government may disallow zero-rating plans in its final policy, but with the exemption of certain government services aimed at education and health. -Ratnakar
