Will interpret on LoP, if no response: SC

Congress party, which fails to secure Leader of Opposition party (LoP)status due to lack of necessary strength in Loksabha is very happy to hear Supreme Court saying that it would interpret the legal provisions of the LoP to sync with the current situation, if the Central government fails to reacts to its notices served yesterday within two weeks.

The three member apex court bench consisting of Justices Kurian Joseph and R F Nariman as members and presided over by Chief Justice R M Lodha, categorically stated “If the government fails to resolve the LoP issue, the court may give a larger interpretation to the term so that it may include the leader of the largest party or the leader of a large group.” The apex court asked the government why it fails to accord LoP status to any party until now. It stated that the LoP issue is directly linked to appointments in the Lokpal panel and several statutory bodies. Hence, the government should not delay its decision in according LoP status to largest party, said the apex court bench.

Mukul Rohatgi, the Attorney General of India representing the government of India surprised the court by stating the government is considering reviewing its decision on this issue. So, it is only a matter of time for Congress party to get LoP status. However, Congress party, which ruled the country for the last ten years, now fighting for LoP status reveals its miserable situation of it.
