DMK’s decision makes Nitish and UPA come close

Nitish Kumar’s latest demand for special status to his Bihar state has come as a blessing for the beleaguered UPA government, which falls into minority because of the DMK party withdrawal its support to it. Even before Nitish returns home, Congress has swiftly reacted to his appeal made to Finance Minister Chidambaram and Planning Commission vice president Mantec Ahuluwalia on yesterday. Congress has decided to form a committee to study the possibilities of granting special status to Bihar and the same is conveyed to him immediately.

Nitish Kumar acknowledging the Congress reaction has said “I am extremely happy to know that there is some progress in this direction.” The sudden change in political situation has turned the stars in Nitish favor. When, he made a rally at New Delhi on Sunday, actually he didn’t expect the UPA to act so swiftly as he too knows that the elections are one year away and hence time is not ripe for entering into any deal between the two parties. But, DMK’s decision has brings an unpredicted advantage and importance to him and his party at national level.

However, UPA government has begun its efforts to attract Nitish Kumar by earmarking huge part of the budget especially for his state Bihar. This was announced by Finance Minister Chidambaram, while submitting the budget few days ago. That attempt followed by Nitish Kumar’s latest demand for special status has now come as a blessing for UPA government, which badly need his support at a crucial time like this. As against Congress’ snail pace functioning style, it has reacted swiftly within hours of his appeal, only because of its desperate situation.
