Tax on Facebook and Twitter

Don’t worry, it isn’t in India and may never happen at our place. The Uganda parliament has recently passed a controversial bill imposing a tax of Rs 3.55 (200 shillings) to be levied from people using various social media platforms. The bill has come into effect from July 1. The social media platforms identified for the purpose were Google Hangouts, YouTube, Skype, Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook. Though the bill was met with huge opposition, Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has defended the tax by saying- "The social - media users have no right to squander the dollars I earn from my coffee, my milk etc by endlessly donating money to foreign telephone companies through chatting or even lying.’
