Freedom of Expression can’t be restricted: SC

During the recent times, several people were arrested for expressing their views or for criticizing the state governments or some political persons in power. Some state governments are also imposing ban on some websites or on the media for the same reasons. The Supreme Court responding to a petition has stated that Section 66A of the IT Act should be scrapped as it is against the constitution. The court has stated that police can’t arrest any person merely for expressing his or her views in the websites or social networking sites like Face Book, Twitter etc. under this section unless the content is encouraging or supporting criminal acts that are harmful to the society.
