SC says nothing wrong in Live-in Relationships

The growing number of live-in relationships in the country and subsequent adverse effects of them makes Supreme Court spell its opinion and order the government to amend the existing laws to provide full cover to sufferers of such broken relationships.

A bench headed by Justice K S Radhakrishnan has expressed its views and gave some guidelines to government in this regard, in its latest verdict. Justice K S Radhakrishnan said, “Live-in or marriage like relationship is neither a crime nor a sin though it is not acceptable in our country. It is up to the couple to decide whether to get married or settle for a live-in relationship for having a heterosexual relationship between them."

"However, if they are broken, women and children born out of this kind of relationships are the silent sufferers, as the society doesn’t like to accept or acknowledge such relationships. Since, there are no appropriate laws to cover the sufferers, many women and children in the country are facing social and legal problems. Hence, a proper legislation is to be made by the Parliament for their protection and to ensure the legal rights of the sufferers,” said justice Justice K S Radhakrishnan
