2 Died In Jallikatti Event In TN

Jallikattu, the traditional bull-taming festival was held in some parts of Tamil Nadu today, even though locals in Madurai's Alanganallur, where Chief Minister O Panneerselvam was expected to inaugurate the event, refused to hold the sport, demanding a 'permanent solution'.

The state had passed an Ordinance or an executive order -- which expires in six months -- that allows the sport this year. Thousands are continuing the protest in Chennai's Marina Beach.

Unfortunately, two men died in a Jallikattu event in Pudukottai on Sunday. The two men, who were injured while holding on to a bucking bull, died on the way to the hospital.

The Jallikattu events were held after week-long state-wide protests by students and youths and followed the promulgation of an ordinance by the Tamil Nadu government amending the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to hold Jallikatttu. The sport was banned by the Supreme Court in May 2014.
