HC asks to Government justify power hike

Responding to a public interest petition filed against the government challenging its decision of increasing the electrical tariff, High Court serves notices to state government. It asks the government to give explanation on what basis it has increased the power tariff and to submit the supporting records to justify its decision. The petitioner has said that the government’s decision is badly affecting on the poor and middle class people. He complains the power regulatory Council has shown negligence in hearing what people say about hike proposal in its recent meeting and simply approved the hike in power tariff. He writes that Lanco and GMR power projects, which avail subsidies from the state government under various schemes, are making big money by selling the power to other states, while the people of the state are deprived of power supply. Hence, the High Court slaps notices to the state government.
