Center admits political influence on legal system

The controversy erupted with the letter and media statements by Markandeya Katju, the Chairman of Press Counsel of India, who earlier has served as Supreme Court Judge forced the NDA government to give reply to his allegations.

Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union Law Minister, replying to a question by AIADMK MPs in Rajyasabha yesterday, admits that there was some political influence on the legal system during UPA regime. He said that the Supreme Court collegium had ‘certain reservations’ on continuing an accused additional judge, but revokes its decision after it received a letter from PMO. However, the minister refused to announce the name of the person, who pressurized the collegium to revoke its decision. He said it is not appropriate to discuss about the collegium members’ decision as they were retired from their services long back. Evidently, his statement proves that whatever allegations made by Markandeya Karju are genuine.
