Gavaskar is the first cricketer to reach 10,000 runs in Test and 30 centuries. He has a Test average of 51.12, with his highest run being an unbeaten 236 runs. On his Test debut against the fearsome West Indies, in March 1971, he scored 65 in the first innings and remained 67 not out in the second innings. Even in his last Test match he scored 96 against Pakistan in March 1987.
He has been involved in various roles with the BCCI after retiring from cricket and even served as the Chairman of the ICC cricket committee. He lead India on several occasions in 1970s and 1980s.
