Updated : Sep 30, 2016
Karnataka was slammed by the Supreme court for refusing to follow its orders and directed it to release 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu from tomorrow onwards till October 6. The court order came despite Karnataka government saying that it is not in a positionto release water. The state government had on Wednesday chosen to defer releasing water to Tamil Nadu till the meeting of chief ministers of both states with Union water resources minister Uma Bharti in New Delhi on Thursday. "Karnataka is flouting order and creating situation in which the majesty of law is dented," an angry Supreme Court noted. The apex court also issued a directive to the Centre asking it to form a Cauvery Water Management Board by October 4. It asked Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry to give names of members for the board by tomorrow. This is the second time Karnataka has decided to defer release of water to Tamil Nadu . The earlier deferment pertained to the Supreme court directive of September 20 asking Karnataka to release 6,000 cusecs per day till September 27.
