Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand recalled

Government of India recalled its High Commissioner to New Zealand Ravi Thapar to the Headquarters in New Delhi, on the charges that his wife assaulted a domestic help working in their house. The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed this news on Saturday. It said “The High Commissioner was recalled and posted at Headquarters in New Delhi.”

MEA spokesperson said, “The Indian domestic help left the house after this incident. It was brought to Ministry’s notice on May 10, 2015. Then the Indian High Commission informed New Zealand Police and Foreign Office. However, the Indian domestic help appeared before the New Zealand police and complained about the assault, but not pressed for any charges against Mrs. Ravi Thapar. The MEA deputed a team to New Zealand to conduct preliminary inquiry of this incident and to liaise with the New Zealand authorities. Later, on May 28, the Indian domestic help was returned to India on his request. MEA will treat such incidents very seriously as they may turn very embarrassing for the Government of India.”
