Mahesh Babu and AR Murugadoss are top masters in their respective zones. Spyder in their combination indeed was the highly anticipated among Dussehra releases. Did the movie reach the high expectations?
Story:
Shiva (Mahesh Babu), a highly talented guy works in intelligence bureau. Though he has got many other options the sole reason for him choosing the field is to save people in dire conditions. He unofficially taps many calls to check whether anybody is in trouble. Meanwhile, Shiva lures a medico (Rakul Preet Singh) who too likes his company.
When things go smoothly for Shiva one incident brings all troubles to him. When he is in a mission to catch a serial killer, he witnesses an unforeseen twist in the form of Bhairavudu (SJ Suryah). Who’s Bhairavudu? What’s his story? Why he turned a serial killer? Why Bhairavudu personally targeted Shiva?

Analysis:
Director AR Murugadoss is known for making message oriented films commercially. Likewise, in his latest film Spyder too he has discussed about a good point of humanity in current generation. Coming to the story, Shiva works at Intelligence bureau as call data analysts. As part of his job, he needs to tap only emergency cases. However, he breaks the rule to help all the needy people. Director tried to depict Mahesh’s character in first song- ‘S P Y’. Shiva actually designs a software which tracks the calls when a caller utters the words ‘help’, ‘fear’, ‘save’ etc. When his parents, friends and higher officials ask him to join other better jobs which meet his skills, he declines them saying he has satisfaction in helping people in troubles.
However, director spoke negatively about police department in order to show positive side of protagonist character which says police will go to scene only after something bad happens. Then, such committed youth attracts towards a medico for no good reason. Interim, an incident of two brutal murders in an apartment shocks entire city. Then in the process of Shiva trying to find out the killer, he gets to know shocking things about him. The flashback episodes of narrating the childhood incidents which led Bhairavudu to become a psycho are horrific and are off on the nativity. Here another twist has been revealed about Bhairavudu and his brother. The mass killings at metro construction are far dreadful. Roller-coaster fight was best part in first half.
Second half starts with Bhairavudu targeting Shiva and his family. The sequence of Shiva saving his family from the psycho was brilliant, but we feel grief-stricken as Shiva prolongs with silly discussion on phone in such awful circumstances. There was no tension built because of feeble writing and further weak taking. The interrogation scene was also not up to the mark. Then, the boulder rolling and hospital attack sequences are included only to elevate hero character. Nonetheless, these episodes came out unrealistic. There hardly have any gripping episodes in second half. Then, additional damage occurred with songs.
Artists Performances:
Obviously as all we know Mahesh Babu is a good actor and he has proved his abilities many times in previous movies. First of all we don’t get any idea on why Mahesh Babu has chosen such subject which hardly has any scope for him to perform, though he played his role with ease. SJ Suryah is real hero of the film. Though his character has shades of Joker in Dark Knight, he gave stellar performance. The sequences of Suryah getting pleasure by imitating people in misery give us an idea about his acting prowess. Rakul Preet Singh was restricted just for songs. Bharath was wasted completely for a brief role. The child artist who played young Suryah was brilliant. Other artists were okay.
Technical Aspect:
Murugadoss committed the big gaffe he committed previously for Stalin. Though plots were good, feeble execution played spoilsport for both the movies. Rather giving minimum of space to humanity, director spoke more about cruelty and increase of sadistic nature in people in current generation. Murugadoss has failed as director as well. The movie hardly has any pleasing elements from start to end. Santosh Sivan is an award winning cinematographer and he put in maximum efforts to can the film. Harris Jayraj gave pretty average sound tracks, though his work on BGM was fascinating. The theme music of antagonist was enchanting. Editing by Sreekar Prasad was middling. Production values are high in standard but the makers spent excess budget on unnecessary episodes.
Verdict:
Spyder is not a perfect film for families who wish to watch along with their family members for the festival. It may not even please masses and multiplex audiences as well.
