Formula 1 or F1 racing has millions of fans worldwide and the motorsport has been able to create huge amount of fan frenzy with great drivers evolving over time. The toughness of different circuits, the dependence on nature to be kind, the kind of tyres, engineering marvel needed to build a car that can race at 300 Miles per Hour speed consistently, makes this sport the exhilarating adventure it is. Now, Brad Pitt has brought a fictional movie based on this motorsport and let's discuss about it in detail.
Plot:
Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), as a rookie in 1990's impressed each and every motorsport enthusiast but a freaky racing accident, ended his career. After 30 years, his friend Ruben (Javier Bardem), now an owner of APXGP F1 team, finds him and asks him to race for his team for the rest of the season as they are desperate for a win. Sonny Hayes resorts to living in a van and he is finding any racing circuit job as a nomad, even though it would be challenging.
He accepts as a favor for his long time friend and starts racing on tough F1 tracks. Rookie in the team, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) feels threatened by his presence and he is looking to impress other teams to find a new job as APX could be sold out without a win. Team technical director Kate McKenna (Kerry Condon), a rare woman technical director, feels the need to prove her worth to world. Can Sonny Hayes turn this team's fortunes? Watch the movie to know more.
Analysis:
F1 doesn't try to showcase itself as a gritty take on drivers' lives and it doesn't even boast to be an intellectually challenging film. It is a simple Hollywood formulaic underdog story that is done really well. Often we hear filmmakers stating that the makers are planning to deliver an experience in theatres to audiences. Here, F1 does it in an exhilarating fashion.
It feels like we are experiencing it all in a simulator on the real race tracks. The POV shots from the lead actor perspective, keeps us in the heat of the moment from time and time again. It is not important for every audience member to know the intricacies of the Formula 1 racing but it takes us through the journey. Also, the famous cameos of highly popular drivers like Max Vestappan and many others help it creating a fake reality as well.
The movie makes us live a dream in theatres as a F1 driver for the runtime without worrying about real life troubles and issues. We indeed become Sonny Hayes throughout and hoot, cheer at the climax. Being simple helps the movie to recreate the realistic dream like story on the screens. The way Hayes bends the rules and grows in character as an influence in masterfully executed with some cliches, flaws which can be overlooked as the experience is a worthy ride.
Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem and Kerry Condon make it believable with their charming performances and real life characters, cameos and real tracks, everything adds to the experience. Hans Zimmer with his music enhances the experience further. Well, do not expect it to be a classic, yet it is a racing ride that is worthy of every penny.
Bottomline:
Feels like we are racing for an F1 Team.
Rating: 3/5
