Did T Rajender take a dig at Coolie and Leo?

on Oct 13, 2025

Veteran filmmaker and actor T. Rajender has publicly expressed his deep concern regarding the current state of the Tamil film industry, citing a notable absence of magnificent hits in recent months. Rajender is highly celebrated filmmaker from Tamil Cinema and his son, Simbu, has been one of the biggest stars.

Speaking via his official YouTube channel, Rajender drew critical comparisons between Kollywood's box office performance and the success of neighboring industries. He specifically highlighted the impressive run of recent South Indian blockbusters, including the Malayalam hit Lokah and the Kannada phenomenon Kantara.

Rajender stated he was happy for the success of other language films but worried about the decline of Tamil cinema. He pointed out that while films from industries like Malayalam and Kannada are connecting with audiences through meaningful, culture-driven stories, Kollywood appears to be suffering from a creative drought.

He criticized the growing focus on massive budgets and Pan-India hype, suggesting this trend has shifted attention away from originality and strong storytelling. Rajender concluded that Tamil cinema will only thrive again when filmmakers prioritize bringing rooted, culturally resonant stories to the screen.

Some of the Tamil Cinema fans are stating that he took a dig at Vijay's Leo, Rajini's Coolie, Kamal Haasan's Thug Life which had huge promotional campaigns prior to release as big Pan-India hits from Tamil. Well, he does have a point as oppression based films have become a fashion in the language.
