Are Trump's Tariffs going to effect Telugu Cinema?

on May 5, 2025

President Donald Trump has announced that he would want impose tariffs on films imported into USA. He stated that he wants Film Development Boards to tackle the issue of major film productions going out of US and lack of jobs for local people. He stated that tariffs and 100% import duty on foreign films is a big option for them.

He remarked that to encourage more prodcution of films in US and not let the jobs be going to other countries he needs to impose such big tariffs and force Hollywood to pertain to the nation. If these tariffs will come into existence, Indian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean films will be severely hit.

Along with them, even UK and European films will take a big hit as his proposed tariffs could discourage Hollywood to go and shoot outside the nation. This would also decrease Hollywood's influence as biggest film fraternity in the world. The ramifications of these tariffs will be huge for Hollywood as well.

This would be a big blow for Indian Cinema looking to grow its wings in US. For Telugu Cinema, it would be a death blow as Overseas market for TFI is more US than other countries. The ticket rates will increase and even tariffs on OTT platforms are also proposed which could affect global rise of Telugu Cinema.

Hollywood bigwigs are not thrilled by this tariffs and even Los Angeles Governor stated that Trump cannot unilaterally impose tariffs. We have to wait and see how US economists will draft rules if tariffs are to be levied.
