A Move That Could Change The Game

on Jun 6, 2015

All these days small producers are complaining that BIG FOUR are eating the revenues of every film because the whole of theatres are in hands. Fact is that there used to be 2800 theatres earlier in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states but now that got limited to 1500 theatres. Due to poor occupancy rates many single-screen owners have turned their theatres into function halls.

In order to save small films, and to make people much closer to entertainment, a unique has hit tinselville biggies now. How about setting up mini-theatres that have a capacity of 100-200? That seems like a super feasibility. For theatres of such small capacity, there will not be issue of low occupancy rate and also their maintenance will be quite lower than regular single screens.

Balwant Singh, CEO of Kauphy Talkies, is now rolling plans to establish nearly 5000 single screens in both Telugu states. He will be providing new digital technology to screen movies and automatic ticketing softwares for theatres, if someone comes up with constructed theatre and initial investment. A mini-theatre could be built anywhere near 30 lakhs investment to start with.

Film biggies like Ramoji Rao are also excited by this plan of mini-theatres and recently he ordered his team at Ramoji Film City to study the feasibly and come up with a plan. Buzz has that Ramoji wants to build at least 2000 theatres on brand RFC and run small movies. If thousands of mini theatres are erected, then surely small producers and filmmakers will not be facing troubles for release and there will be no issues like lack of theatres.

But how far this plan will get executed without facing any tough troubles from biggies who have rooted deep into distribution and exhibition networks? If it gets executed passing all the hurdles behind, then it will be a game changer.
