Rahman A Renaissance: ARR starts writing his biopic

Sep 1, 2026 7:17PM

A.R. Rahman is turning the lens on himself. The Oscar-winning composer is set to co-author a new memoir titled Rahman: A Renaissance with writer Rupa Chakravarty, giving readers a closer look at the experiences, influences and ideas behind his extraordinary musical journey.

What makes the book interesting is that Rahman is not limiting it to a conventional career retrospective. The memoir is expected to explore his early years, artistic evolution and the thought process behind his music, along with the personal experiences, challenges, faith and internal conflicts that have influenced his work. Rahman himself says his music is connected to the constant evolution of his mind and everything he experiences around him.

Rahman’s journey is particularly significant because of how dramatically his career changed the soundscape of Indian cinema. After working with several composers early in his career, he made his full-fledged debut with Mani Ratnam’s Roja in 1992. He went on to become a global name, winning multiple National Film Awards, Grammys, a Golden Globe and two Academy Awards for Slumdog Millionaire.

The collaboration with Rupa Chakravarty also suggests that the book will go beyond simply listing milestones. Rahman has described the memoir as an opportunity to revisit the moments and influences that shaped his creative journey, potentially offering a glimpse into the person and thought process behind some of Indian cinema’s most recognisable music.
